The brother of the Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee decides to go to the circus, one fine Saturday afternoon. He pays for his ticket, goes in, and, being The brother of the Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee gets a front row seat. He sits down, and enjoys the performance. However, mid-way through, one of the clowns approaches The brother of the Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee. The clown leans over and says 'are you the front of an ass?' The brother of the Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee says 'no I am not.' The clown says 'are you the back of an ass?' The brother of the Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee says 'no I am not.' The clown turns to face the audience and says 'well, you must be no end of an ass!' The audience cracks up with laughter. The brother of the Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee is furious, and stands up and walks out.

When he gets home, he tells his brother, The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee, what has happened at the circus. The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee says to him 'it's alright, brother, leave this one to me.'

The next day, The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee goes to the circus. He pays for his ticket, goes in and has a front row seat, being The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee. He sits down, and begins to enjoy the performance. However, about halfway through, a clown approaches him. The clown leans over and says to The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee 'are you the front of an ass?' to which The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee replies 'no I bloody well am not.' The clown says 'well, are you the back of an ass?' to which The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee says 'no, I am not.' The clown turns to the audience and announces 'well then, you must be no end of an ass!' to which The Grand High Master of Wit & Ready Repartee stands up and says 'f#ck off, you [****!!****].'

It's the way that you tell 'em.

 

The original version has the first visitor to the circus being humiliated by the red-nosed clown. He leaves the circus [the visitor, not the clown] in tears of embarrassment. He decides that he must fight back. He enrols at University and takes a BSc in Wit & Repartee. 3 years later, he sits for his Masters and passes with distinction.

 

He travels the world on the lecture party circuit, perfecting his art.

 

5 years later he decides that he is ready to seek revenge on the clown. He returns to the circus and the rest you know.
