Latest from Stade de Len Salmon...

Anyway it's been a nice break. Good bit of father-and-son bonding up at the Stadium Of Light, whatever you say about the quality of football, a 43,000 crowd is a damn good attendance for 2 relegation threatened sides. Why the hell Cisse is wasting his career (apart from the money) up at Sunderland is beyond me.

Also enjoyed the sun, good food, good company, espeically late on in the evening one night. You know, I'd almost forgotten what to do with it apart from urinate. The last time that was used beat combo called The Beatles had just been formed.

Meanwhile, over at The Hive, somebody might have been getting themselves into a tizzy over a programme article that went something like ...

The only missing regular page was the "Things You Think Might Not Be True About ..." which was replaced by "Things You Wouldn't Believe A Fansfocus Forum User Said - But Did". As I'm sure you are aware all the other regular features were included. You and your team I was no more or less complimentary to than any other team this season.

It was a source of mild amusement, however, to see that you were the only club official worrying about its content prior to publication. The pen, or perhaps the keyboard, does appear to be mightier than the sword at times.

It's nice to hear such platitudes from you, especially when on the evening of 31 March 2009 you gave your opinion on another club programme which wasn't so nice. Indeed the people in the Southend Manor clubhouse were a little surprised when, after briefly reading through the Basildon United v Bowers & Pitsea programme and saying you liked it, you then commented "The Hullbridge programme, it's sh1t." I'm sure the programme editor at that club will be pleased to hear how highly you rate and appreciate their voluntary efforts.

If that is the case then I am more than happy to reproduce the pages in question to ensure you don't miss out.

As most people within the club know by now this will be the last column I write in this illustrious publication. It's not a club thing. Put simply, when you stop enjoying something you do voluntarily, it's probably best to call time on it.

It's been yet another traumatic season for Basildon United. After the storming start, came the storm of a result slump, coaching overhaul and manager resignation before 2008 was out. Since then we've been consistently inconsistently. Overall, however, on the pitch we have improved immeasurably and hope, as ever, springs eternal for The Bees. Although previous incumbent Colin Cook takes a lot of the credit for that, JP has also done a superb job in keeping the squad together since the turn of the year.

Off the pitch, it's been pretty much the same. After the trauma of the early departure of our previous secretary, following on the heels of the summer 2008 resignation of the one before, things have settled down with regard to making sure matches happen. Not only that, but we have a superb website, match dvd's for sale, proper match stewarding and habitable toilets. The turnaround from 12 months ago is scarcely believable and credit must go to Richard, George and Cliffy
