Chancer, nice to know you played the game.
I reckon you must have been a keeper as they are not the full ticket.
Anyway good luck do you still play or coach ????

impressive job title. maybe you should have spent a little less time telling people your lengthy title and responsibilities and actually focussed the time on doing it and you could strike the "ex" bit from all of that.

I have seen a few good coaches that work for professional clubs unable to cope with the demands and unpredictability of non league footie. They have got disheartened(rightly so in some cases)and decided to stick to coaching at academies, which is more rewarding.A lot of them have the development of players as their main target but in non league footie very often you're judged only by results and "Winning at any cost" is the ruling....wrong or right is not down to me to say.

Cider, that's what i meant....the coaches in English nonleague footie are a rarity. It's all about bringing players in,training facilities are non existent,it's all about playing 3 games in a week(training thursday is just a get together) and the English coach is merely a fitness trainer. That's why you and a lot of other coaches sticks with kids at Academies or Soccer Schools and are scared to take the plonge and if you have done it before you have scorched yourselves for sure.

I'm the coach,manager,kit man,cleaner,match programme editor,cook,everything!!! grin

Never a tea boy though!!

Colin Reid = Great Academy Coach.

Crap manager at East Thurrock United. Not his fault, came in half way through the season (95'96) and inherited a hostile playing staff!!!

Spot on Hookey!!One of the many examples. Not their faults though..its just that non league footie is not ready for them and there is no training culture. It's all about playing, swearing and throwing sandwiches at half time crazy

I went to watch East Thurrock United v Canvey Island on Boxing Day (at Rookery Hill) in 1995. Reidy was in the ETU dugout and Kingy was in the Canvey dugout. Talk about chalk and cheese!

Reidy was all about "Patterns of play" and all that good coaching stuff, Kingy was just bellowing orders and dictating instructions.... Canvey won.

By coincidence, the following week I was playing for Nicholas Colts Vets v Canvey Island Vets and Kingy was playing. After the game I asked him how he thought Reidy would do at ETU, he said he had no chance, because he had never played at that level and did not how to talk to senior players (Having spent most of his life coaching kids). He was right.

I don`t think that you can label all academy coaches in this way. Before reidy was a coach called Andy Mcdermid who worked and is still working or Arsenal.I played for him at Billericay and at East Thurrock.Peter Brabrook was another fantastic coach at Academy and non league.I could go on.I have watched the ESL since 73 and played in it in the 90`s.I think you have to have the game understanding to adapt to both.

Never scorched myself.Did one season and would let others judge if i was a success or failure.3rd with no budget so not bad.I understand your point but in 22 years of coaching i have invested may hours and pound notes to gain the qualifications that i have.I felt it was time i got something back.

Of course not, I was just giving an example of someone who wasn't able to transfer his excellent coaching skills to the non-league game. It's a subject close to my heart as my 21 year old son is a full-time Level 2 coach.

Cider, you're a classic example of a good coach that got disheartened by the environment. No financial retribution or very limited, old fashioned mentality by players that training is not important and therefore making all sort of excuses to miss it or a trip to the physio room at the worst!Let's be realistic lads,a Jeff King scenario for example would never happen in countries like France,Germany,Italy or Spain, might be a chairman a la Briatore...but never coaching a team, they wouldn't let someone without proper badges get close to it.I always keep saying that there are a lot of managers out there and anyone can pick a team even Joe Blogg, but not enough good coaches. They don't wanna know and prefer a financial rewarding job with no hassle at soccer schools and academies. The only way it could change is with the FA doing what they have done at pro level.Minimum coaching qualifications at level 2 or 3 from step 7 to Conference if you wanna be in charge of a team otherwise join the club officials list, committee members or else which is still an even harder job! That's why we haven't got a Mourinho,Wenger or Benitez over here.If they were English would have been coaching at Ryman premier level or may be dropping out of it altogether!!Disillusioned and disheartened...

Hey Hooks, this is the story for many, was having the same conversation in B+Q yesterday, if it helps look on the ESSEX FA website for the jobs for the FA Skills coaches, a friend of mine started there and now is a manager of a non league club.
