The Brian Sutchley sending off

Recommended Posts

Spoke to Brian at half time his version of events were as follows:-

1st Yellow:- Conceedes a nothing foul. Puts hand on ref's shoulder in a friendly way saying "sorry ref" re the foul. The ref tells Sutchley not to touch raising his own hand towars Sutchley's face. Sutchley asks the ref not to raise his hand at him and is promptly booked.

2nd Yellow:- Conceedes a second nothing foul (about 15 mins after 1st one). Ref follows him into the penalty area and says "watch yourself big boy". Sutchley says "dont call me big boy". I think there was a further exchange of communication which I can't recall and Sutchley is shown a second yellow and sent off.

The main point Brian was getting at was that a)he never swore at the ref prior to being sent off b)I belive he said the ref swore at him c)it was as if the ref was looking for confrontation. It seems from Brian's account that he was disrespected by the ref and put in a very difficult position.

The ref was bad but the above is far from the truth Boroman, come on mate.

The first "nothing foul" was his third foul on our forward in a 5 minute period. The foul in question was a knee and follow through into the back of the Manor forward.

The ref warned all players including Brian about back chat and dissent and he persistently chipped away, this is why he was booked for the 1st time.

Not sure what was said re: the second yellow, but Sutchley was very aggressive to the ref and indeed actually pointed his finger very close to the referee's face. 2nd yellow, harsh me thinks but that ref was always gunning for him after the previous confrontation.

Also Boroman, you fail to mention the reaction after the red was produced when Sutchley feined a punch at the ref but luckily calmed down at the last minute....this resulted in the ref taking a few steps back.

I am not trying to start trouble or an arguement and I totally agree that the referee was terrible and indeed very very rude but Brian Sutchley's aggresive attitude did'nt help the situation. Even two of your players commened that "he (Sutchley) had stitched the team up"

Beauty of football ay. Although saying that, the referee was very rude and ignorent Coachy.

Unfortunatley for Brian Sutchley, he clashed early on with the ref and they kept chipping away at each other until the booking and sending off.

Second yellow was a tad harsh, ecspecially if the ref called him "Big Boy" as a few people said. If you called a ref that, you would get booked.

Re the dummy punch, yes I did see that but was talking about up to the point the red card was produced. I actually thought for one horrible moment he was going to deck the ref.

Brian's behaviour to one side for a moment. I really dont understand refs that have to apply such an attitude to their control of the game. The best ones are those who just get on with things, book and send off if they have to but without all the theatrics.

Silencer. I am only quoting what he said to me at half time, not saying thats what I saw happen. However I do take issue with your version of the first foul. Part of the problem is your pitch at this time of the year. The ball hangs in the air after the bounce for so long it is difficult to time anything, especially when you have a guy the size of Brian coming up against a much smaller player.

However if you are saying that he was chipping away at the ref ongoing then fair enough.

In any case it'll all be balanced out tomorrow evening. Basildon United will beat Enfield 1893.
