Slough v Gosport: Good News

Recommended Posts

Right, just to keep everyone informed as to what happened on Tuesday.

I received a call around 5.30 saying power was out at the ground and the electric company had been notified and Beaconsfield had been assured power would be restored shortly.

I arrived at the ground at about 6.15 and spoke to Paul Hughes (Beaconsfield SYCOB) who said the electric company had been working on the problem and power would be restored by 6.45.

I notified the referee upon his arrival and Gosport were also informed of the current situation.

At 6.50 when the power had not come back on, we reviewed the situation with the referee. We wanted to get the game on and were happy to wait as long as possible. The Gosport manager had concerns about leaving to go home, but at no point did they exert unnecessary pressure on the referee to make an early decision. Their preference was for an early decision so they could get back home, but we agreed to review at 7pm and see if we could get further information from the electric company.

At 7pm, having spoken with Julie who was in constant contact with the electric company, we were advised it would be highly unlikely that power would be restored in the immediate future. I passed this information onto the referee and we agreed to review at 7.15pm and make a decision on the game at this point.

We again spoke with the electric company at 7.15 and were put through to an engineer (some ten minutes later) who was working on the problem to be told it was unlikely that power was going to be restored. At this point, we informed the referee and given the information we had been provided with, the decision was made and agreed to call the game off.

The Southern League will make the decision on the gate money from the re-arranged fixture, although as no money was taken on the night, I am hopeful we can treat it as a normal home fixture when the game is re-arranged. We will more than likely be liable for Gosports travelling costs to the game. (

yes apologies to gary ..we did put pressure on him , but unfortunatly he had to bare the disbelief that we normally would have waited for a reasonable time after kick off to get the game played...but of course we did not know the facts..

apologies to gary..
