Beckham's Record England Caps

I think David Beckham has been a very good player over the years...not great, not a legend, not an icon/symbolic player just very good. Consistent, hard working, dead ball specialist but Legend? No way.

 

How on earth has he made so many England appearances? Is it because we haven't been that good or do people think he is that good? Has he had no competition? Is it becasue we play more games nowadays? Some players get more injuries and so make less appearances?

 

Off the top of my head I've listed players who can be classed as great, legends etc who haven't had as many caps:

 

Gordon Banks

Peter Beardsley

Tony Adams

Glenn Hoddle

Gary Lineker

Bobby Charlton

Bobby Moore (well he has the record but it is going to be broken)

Kenny Samson

Kevin Keegan

 

Anyway what are people opinions?

Sorry Jenko, but absolute b*llocks.

 

He deserves every single England cap he has gained. Think of the amount of times he has bailed us out (v Greece in 2005/6 as an example), and the effort and commitment he shows everytime he puts the shirt on.

 

We havent been that good? When have we ever been good? England have always been the "oh so close" team. So much potential but never quite make it.

 

He has had plenty of competition, but there is no-one with a wand of a right foot like he has. He may not have pace to glide past defenders, but if you can whip a ball in behind the defence like he can, then who needs to run to the by-line and get a cross in?

 

The players you have listed are all players who have retired, therefore gain their legendary status.

 

When Beckham retires (whenever that maybe), he will gain legendary status, and he fcking deserves it.

 

He is good enough to still start in the England team, and deserves his place in the side.

Glenn Hoddle was definitely under used by England without a doubt, a finer passer of the football as there has been in this country, and has played at Park Lane

Bailed us out..one example - Greece.

 

F**ked it up - Argentina 1998, Brazil 2002 (Jumped out of a tackle on the half way line and then the ball was crossed into Rivaldo to score), Penalty miss Portugal. Turned up for two major tornaments unfit and was still played. He should have been professional enough to put his hand up and say I'm not fit enough. Instead he played and it was like we had 10 men.

 

Beckham has good qualities but for all of them he has major faults which equal him out as a very good player and certainly not 112 (I think its 112)caps worth.

 

Much better players than him should be well above him in terms of number of caps. Don't get me wrong I like him and think he should be in the England squad at the moment but never ever good enough to be our record cap holder!

F*cked it up. Thats the problem. He made a mistake by getting sent off against Argentina, and suddenly we blame him for costing us the game?

What about Batty and Ince for missing penalties? Or Shearer / Owen not taking their chances, despite being down to 10 men?

 

If we went on individual mistakes costing us games, then nobody would be safe. Its a scapegoat excuse, and I dont agree with it.

 

If Beckham says he is fit, then you have to believe it. Im sure the fitness team in the England camp could assess whether he was fit enough to play or not, im sure it wasnt just his decision.

 

Major faults?! Where?! Apart from him not having blistering pace, I cant think of any others?

 

He has earnt 112 caps cause he is good enough, and he has looked after himself.

Yes we seem to play more games in this day and age, but thats due to demand for more.

 

Thats tough that other people dont have more caps. Maybe we should be having a debate about who has been the best players for England, rather than how many caps then?

 

I guarantee if you pick an All Time England X1, then Becks will be in it.

Well if he didn't get sent off against Argentina we would have had a better chance. Faults, I'd say lack of pace, can't go past people, indisciplined in terms of position play.

 

If we picked an England 11 I'd have Trevor Steven or Chris Waddle right wing all day long.

I don't begrudge Becks any of his caps but he can't really be compared with Mooro's 108 caps, of which 90 were as captain and none of them were as a sub.

Jenks i think you are talking Tosh here mate . Becks is worth every single one of his 109 caps , 99 of them have been starts aswell.

He is an English football legend end of. People will be talking about him way after he has retired .

 

Anyway , he and shilton will get eclipsed by rooney. Did you see ITV's stat on Saturday night . At 23 years and 5 months ( what rooney is now) , Beckham had 19 caps, Rooney has 49 . He could get 150 caps for england quite easily and break the scoring record (21 already)

I can't knock Becks, he has become a good example for youngsters over the years, as well as being a quality player. Good luck to him.

beckham is class what a player, what ever you say about him he never lets you down on the pitch, worth every cap he gets, also think he should go to the world cup

Yeah I saw that stat Trenks. Rooney could smash the appearence record. Just think if Owen had stayed fit and in form how many would he have?

No-one can cross a ball in like Beckham, just look at the positive change in moral and play in the team everytime he comes on. Lennon can run around but if he cant cross a ball in to save his life whats the use, especially when he's on thw wing.. I can't understand how people still manage to slag him off when its visible on the pitch he still adds that bit of quality most the team do not have.

Becks is awesome he played for 2 of the greatest clubs in the world. And has been a fantastic role model for kids. Look at George Best finished in his early twenties destroyed by fame. David Beckham for all his media attention has had next to nothing in the way of sleaze or dirt dished up about him.
