lesbos
fecking hell are we going have a row about the first world war,the generals were no more at fault in the first world war than any other war, this was the first modern war because of the invention of the machine gun which lead to trench warfare but its good to see that the old myths about bad generals still prevail.stop it with the tired old cliches. coupwotcoup
Trench warfare had been prevelant for years.. if the Germans hadn't bottled it and gone straight through Alsace and Lorraine.. it would have been all over in weeks. And they didn't realise that the French had stripped the armaments at Verdun to the bare bones.. and to paraphrase Boney M - Oh those Franco-Prussians.. coupwotcoup
We have moved from the passing of a nonentity to the machinations of the German's First World War tactics in about ten moves.. quality tangentialism..
lesbos
the last major war before 1914 was the franco-prussian which was fought on horseback which wasnt possible with the invention of the machine gun which lead to the trenches and then to deadlock. coupwotcoup
think you will find that the American Civil War had plenty of entrenchments.. and first concentration camp (Andersonville). Little was learned by the Japanese victory over Russia in 1904 and the series of Balkan wars, after that. This is fun, we could while away the hours.. I could show you my degree too.. The Great Eckscape
Hitler was a bad man. Churchill was a good man. But if you were in a hot air balloon with Hitler & Churchill and you were losing altitude rapidly, which one would you throw out?
Lightweight
You say it was modern warfare and the Generals had not grasped the fact. So how was it 4 years into the war they were still sending thousands of young men over the top to be mowed down by machine gun fire. How many times did they have to do that before they realised it didn't work. That was a good game of footy we had in no mans land in the christmas of 1914 don't you think ( Keeping to a football theme )
lesbos
churchill was a good man??? feck me if your defination of good man is a drunken anti-semite who read out ghost written humbug in parliament then i despair young glen. coup i was refering to european warfare, did you really have to take a degree to reach cliche ridden second hand opinions which you could have just as easily picked up watching blackadder 4 repeats?? Brewerytown
It was because of the slaughter they witnessed as Lieutenants and captains in the first world war that we had good generals and Field Marshall's in the second.
coupwotcoup
If you read the thread properly, there wasn't a hint of humour.
