UNITED

Never been one for causing controversy, but i thought it might kick off an interesting topic, its been said before that a united Island team could be the answer, playing at a new ground in the area would the council be interested in any involement with such an idea, and we have proved in our Conference days that good gates can be achieved,of course this is all conjecture and that it will draw criticism.

Been suggested before and blocked by ramsgate Councillors before. When we were told of their support if we changed our name we were lied to and stitched up.

Then of course if we were to get a big match like fulham again or got ourselves back up the pyamid they would crawl out of the woodwork and claim they always backed us.

From memory, Thanet utd was someone's aptempt to merge Margate and Ramsgate, in early 80's,and possably sell off both grounds to finance it,Margate being the big team in them days, and Rams were Kent league,I remember it because ,we were worried that Ramsgate name and identity would go, (clearly) and Margate know doubt having the better players would know doubt field most of the first team, it was not liked at all i remmeber, but i felt Margate needed it more than us,(even to changing the name to Thanet Utd), as Frankie100 says i think it was blocked by a Ramsgate counciller, I personally would not want a Thanet Utd, but if a merger were to happen maybe a ground share,(as we are in a very cramped area) keeping the names of Margate and Ramsgate fc, but that may signal the beginning of the end if we did that

As I said I'm not in favour of any merger (not that it's being seriously proposed) but as regards the point about the last five years...

*We have dropped two levels since 2004, and there is a chance it will be three in May. At least TUFC started and finished at the same level.

*TUFC was often short of money but I don't recall any winding up orders or groundsharing in those years.

Thanet Utd were run on a shoestring and after we changed our name to Thanet Utd and all our backers walked away we had to rely on Sunday League players to fill the team and were bankrolled by one man. Bob Griffths RIP

I was on the board when we were lied to by the council official over backing us and the struggle we had to suffer

As I remember it Thanet United was an attempt to have one represntative side in Thanet, but it never worked because Ramsgate continued, and the Thanet United ground was at Hartsdown Park which would never attract Ramsgate fans. If the earlier proposed new ground in Haine Road actually had happened it might have become more attractive to both sets of fans but in all truth I think we are too devisive to attempt any sort of amalgamaton

In a word, no.

In two words, hell no.

I think it is healthier to have local rivals. Without the Island derbies both clubs would have been at least

Football is being strangled by the credit crunch just like any other bussiness in the country . It stated in the paper today that loads of players will be out of work in the summer because the clubs won`t be able to keep them on . In a way you could see that in theory merging clubs together would be a good thing reducing payments and debt but the love and passion of football could never be stopped so mergers no matter how bad the state of the country is will never happen . Up the Gate .

Absolutely agree - definitely no merger.

Enough is being done to merge the towns in Thanet to Westwood anyway so let's at least keep the football teams.

As I understand it the plan for the two towns generally is that Ramsgate has a harbour and cafe culture and Margate has the Turner centre so at the worst on a bad derby day we would have Ramsgate fans throwing coffee over the Margate fans who would be defending themselves with paint brushes and palettes.

Oh, and as regards a Westwood team, there was one playing friendlies around 1956 just before the Sunday League restarted.
