Cheshunt v's ETFC

Recommended Posts

The Cheshunt boys look as if they are suffering a touch of late even with a 2-1 win against Hillingdon on Saturday.

It all depends on our injury list for me, if Ellis, Blower, Deane all recover and are fit to play to the maximum then I'll predict a 2-0 win for Town otherwise our squad is thin on quality back up in my opinion in regards to like for like replacements.

Potential for a decent game here and local pride of course.

I do believe that this highlights the main point that has been raised by Supporters over this season.

We have all made jokes about the revolving door approach to Player comings and goings, but with 80ish signed on what are we left with ?

It showed at Aveley how short of cover we are with no defenders on the bench and Deano coming on at left back !!

We now have several games to play with our squad depleted by suspensions, injuries etc, ( as other teams ) BUT, with a basic lack of squad depth to cover for missing Players.

Is it any wonder that the supporters are fed up with the current policies employed by our Board and the Management Team which they appointed ?

Many supporters have noted what a complete waste of time this season has been where the CLUB have been static or fallen behind on the playing field. ( all be it good work on the QE Stadium ).

Another season like this and attendences will be like all others in the League - below 100 and then a reduction in cash thro' the door.

Very frustrating, when no progress can be seen, despite the 80ish signings.

Let's hope some recover from Saturday in time for Cheshunt.

Do you not think we played well on Saturday? I certainly did - I don't think that a neutral would have been able to pick out which of the two sides was top of the table, and for me, that's a positive based on where we were a few months ago.

The side is more settled now, and I'm starting to get to know most of the newer players, and what they bring to the side. As for a lack of defenders, I agree that not having a recognised defender on the bench was a problem, but both our first choice full backs are injured which is always going to leave us short. I thought Deane did admirably at left back when he came on, and May continued to do well out of position at full back.

Perhaps it's just me being a glass half full person, but I think that if we can keep the nucleus of this team together next season, with a couple of quality additions in key positions we'll be in better shape this time next year.

Well lets hope so.

As for Aveley game I thought we lacked punch up front and although I like Healey with Remy I think it was the wrong option against this Aveley defence.

Then we play long high balls to the Lad and expect him to beat the 5 and 6 !!!! Takes me back several months in tactical awareness, or lack of it.

Agree - Remy needs to be the target, not Healey, who needs to work off him, and pick up the scraps. His work rate is one of his biggest assets, and he needs to keep making a nuisance of himself. I thought that too often Ellis won a flick, and there wasn't a Town player within 20 yards of him - that's not just a criticism of Healey, both the wide midfielders should be making runs off him, as he wins his share of flick-ons.

We all know that Aveley have big, strong centre backs, and with Ellis in our side, we are going to play quite direct, as this suits his game, I thought it was a decent battle with both sides winning their share of ball. The game wasn't a classic, and there wasn't loads of goalmouth action or many chances of note, but that doesn't mean we didn't play well. Sometimes you have to dig in, and play ugly to get anything out of games like this - I'm certainly happier with a 0-1 that we could easily have got points from than the 4-7 debacle earlier in the season when we looked like shipping a goal every time they came forward, and our midfield was just non existent.

Credit for making it hard for Aveley to play has to go to a more disciplined Jones, and the excellent McKoy, who just quietly gets on with his game without doing anything spectacular. The number of times he won key headers, broke up play and gave the ball simple was the reason I had him as MoM. He's a good decision maker, and knows when to play, and when to get rid, and strikes me as a calming influence on the rest of the team. I must admit that I was unsure about him to start with, but he's been growing with every game, and looks like a very useful player (I assume this is as he's been getting fitter).

Anyway - more positives than negatives for me, despite the scoreline.

The problem is if you take a kid like Billy out of a game like this he learns nothing and next time you feel the need to take him out again as he has never played that sort of game before and so on.

We are going nowhere this season but Billy's football learning has been advanced in a different type of game so it can't all be bad.

I know what you mean when you say we played well, but i dont think the Aveley defence broke sweat & always looked comfortable & I think they had by far the greater possesion, but as I posted on another thread I thought we could easily have nicked a result, to me it was like watching a cup game between two clubs from diffrent levels, enjoyable game though.

As your asking but its gonna be brief.

For a local Derby I thought the game was a touch flat. I thought Cheshunt were poor however they huffed and puffed and ran there socks off to win, but did'nt have any real quality or goalscoring opportunities.

Our guys played in a gear or two below their potential however still carved out scoring opportunites, mainly for the MOM and busy Sammy Winston. He had two headers one flashed just over and another just wide of the far post, as well as missing an earlier one v one with their keeper. Chris Wild had a header cleared off the line and McCoy (another steady but dominating game) twice could have had a shot at goal but chose to pass.

Our strength was our organisation and little pockets of quality which we had. McKie, May, McCoy Winston and Jones (when he came on for Rudi) were head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch and Dave Allen was steady and strong at the back.

Roll on Saturday, but first we have a supporters meeting on weds and an U16 cup final on thurs, who said its dull at the Town????

Agree a "tight game" - but most derbies are - flat, agree - actually boring in part.

MOM Winston - are you having a laugh or what.
He scored a goal, but missed several chances including a one on one with Harris which he fluffed with 90% of the goal to shoot at.

I think you will find May was MOM ( Official )

Still, it's all about Opinions.
I just don't agree with EU. evil

GOOD LUCK to the u/16's in their Final on Thursday. excited

The first half was very poor and was little better in the second half but at least we got the result with a rare bit of quality with the Jones through ball and Winston finish.

Why do forwards have to foul a defender so often when they are struggling heading towards their own goal and gives them a simple punt upfield to clear? It is one of the things that annoys me most and our forwards kept doing it before the break yesterday.

I thought the right back May was by far the MOM, looked to get forward at every opportunity and played some very good give n go's with Rudi, McCoy and Ellis.

Game as a whole was not a 'classic derby' but a wins a win and its good to see us grind out a result when not playing to our full potential

I wasn't at the game, but I've been impressed with May every time I've seen him, he's competitive, can defend and looks to get the ball down and play as much as he can. Certainly one to hang on to if possible!

Funny, I thought he was denied by an excellent right-footed save from Ashley. Or are we talking about a different chance?

Same I should think.
Yes, a good right footed save by Ashley.
But, in my view, a poor decision by Winston to try and score in the corner of the smallest area of goal available, when 90% of the goal was "open" and available.
