Hares 0 - Citizens 1

Recommended Posts

The Citizens made it three wins out of the last three games when they took the scalp of top of the division HAREFIELD UNITED 1- 0 at Preston Park this afternoon.

With less than 5 minutes gone Adam Wallace passed into the box from the left wing where Stuart Blackburne slotted the ball past the advancing Charlie Miller, the Hares keeper, to take the lead.

The Hares were supplying sustained pressure on the visitors back line and were awarded innumerable free kicks by referee Mr Howes, however, Wallace and Blackburne were posing a constant threat, breaking through to attack the home goal.

It was from a free kick 15 yards out that Darren 'Bomber' Bonfield, in the Citizens goal, made his only real save of the whole game the big man stopping Adam Willis's effort.

Dave Taylor, as ever working hard in midfield, passed through for Vince Rispoli but his shot went wide 25 minutes in. Five minutes later the home side won a corner which was headed onto a post and minutes later Willis's shot was headed over the goal and out for a corner by Rispoli.

As the half was coming to a close Fabio Valent sent a blinding cross in for Stuart Blackburne, the lithe striker volleyed the ball on the turn but was wide of the target. Then just before the whistle Wallace powered his way into the area but there were so many defenders mobbing him he couldn't find a way through.

The second half was much the same as the first and for all their fine football and incisive passing the home team couldn't produce a decent shot on goal. Joe Kelly and Chris Drake combined well but Mark Blackburne had the measure of them and defended the threat and when Danny Buckle squared the ball across the visitors goal there was no one on hand to capitalise.

WGCFC: Bonfield, M Blackburne, T Lewis (Kaphoris), McKay, V Rispoli, J Moore, Wallace, Morton, S Blackburne (Thompson), Taylor, Valenti

OTHER SUBS: Texeira, Pilides, L Rispoli.

The Citizens held on to the end to take the points and leapfrog AYLESBURY VALE to take 14th place in the table although they have 2 games in hand.

We now go on to play HERTFORD TOWN with whom we are level on points but they have a better goal difference and a game in hand. However, the ball is very much in our court and on current form we should do well.

Great game to watch and sunshine as well.

Good to see Bomber in goal, Johnny Moore back in midfield and Richard Morton improving every game. Can't get much better.

Hope Stuart's tight hamstring doesn't keep him out on Tuesday.
