Dream Slough Manager !

Having seen a number of games this year, and by some of the negative posts on this forum about our manager Derek Sweetman.I thought I would like to put up a new topic about my dream manager.I can't say I'm overwhelmed by our current one,but to be fair to him he can spot a talented player but seems to have no idea how to mould them into a team and plays players in the wrong positions and appears tactically naive.

So if money would allow and if we could push the boat out to get him,in my Slough fantasy,I would love to see Steve Thompson[ex-Slough,Wycombe,Woking,Yeovil player]assisant manager/caretaker manager at Yeovil and former RAF PE Instructor approached. To get him I would forsake a few players and their wages and let him mould some youngsters.Obviously with his pedigree,I don't suppose he would be interested in our level of football but with the potential Slough have, who knows if the offer was right.

A more obvious ideal replacement currently who is at our level, who is available is Steve Bateman[ex Slough,Chesham player and a fairly successful manager at Hemel Hempstead].

Unfortunately,Slough past managers have been a list of laughing stock appointments and that's why we're at this the lowly position now ie Steve Browne,Darren Wilkinson,Mark Betts,Eddie Denton.None of these had any managerial experience and didn't exactly exude personality, confidence and know-how on the job at hand.

I firmly believe that if Keith Scott or any other experienced wily campaigners/old heads ie Tony Choules,Gordon Bartlett,George Borg etc was managing our same set of players we have now or have had this season,we would be challenging for the play-offs,not languishing in 16th position.

What do others think?

I believe you are 100% right-Though Steve Thompson used to live in the west country so might be a bit to far to travel-while Bartlett and Borg could not match Thompsons playing career( second only to Reardon skill wise)they are proven managers around the non-league scene.

But I fear money and the obssession with sweetman by those that run the club will not allow changes-sad I guess.

Steve Thompson would not drop down from League One level to manage a team this far down the non-league pyramid.

Steve Bateman would perhaps be a more realistic option but given we have a manager at the moment this talk is pointless.

yeah maybe having a more experienced manager would be ideal but is it really feasible at the moment?? probably not

all this talk about getting rid of Sweetman im sure is not helping the players or staff confidence at all and is probably partly responsible for the lackluster performance the last few weeks. saturday when it got back to 3-2 and 3-3 the support from the fans was non existent though i kinda understand the dislike of sweetman why not just support the team anyway and try and lift them, inspire and motivate them

Yes, Eddie Denton was a complete disaster, wasn't he?! He might have had a decent budget to work with but look at the players we had in that team and look at how many now play at a higher level than when at Slough? That says to me he got a lot more out of many of those players than any of their subsequent managers has which is the sign of a good manager.

Not least of all Denton achieved the greatest result in the Club's history.

Steve Thompson's pretty much got a job lined-up if he wants it's i'd imagine. I'm sure I read somewhere that Gary Johnson said after he left Yeovil that if Steve Thompson ever needed a job he'd find one for him at Bristol City.

And Eddie Denton did well as Ian said. Not sure where you get he did bad from.

Anyway, we have a manager.

Well it looks like Steve Easterbrook is getting ready to line up a high level manager, as I have just had a letter from him asking me to join the 500 club as the club requires more cash.

I might consider joining up if I knew that my money would not be wasted on Sweetman.

Come on Steve make the change and you could get me signing up, and you will also see gates increase as people will come and see proper football rather than the rubish Sweetman dishes up with his 5-2-3 formations and relying on "seconds" all the time.

sweetman is a good bloke but holding team back i feel and dont see much from him during games ive seen, roberts???? maye i like hes passionate and sometimes looks like hes the manager jumping around and shouting instructions on the touchline, i think keep him on and have an proven manager that has achieved something at this level to take us forward another step as in all honesty we have improved slightly this year so thanks to sweetman in that sense.

I disagree, if we get rid of sweetman now there is unsettlement whilst we try to find a new manager. Then the new manager will take time to make his changes and then time for those changes to gel. Its far too risky and sweetman is doing a fine job albeit not up to many peoples standards. We are now in a position to challenge next year though

you raise a good point there Mark44.. i think the test will be for sweetman and management team is the first 5 games of next season if we have not got off to a flyer think the chairman will need to act accordingly...

We also need to ensure that we have a firm base to start next season with, otherwise we will be starting that season the same way as the last few.

That includes setting up friendlies as early as possible, against teams at our level or higher, to ensure we can start the season running, and not limping.

For those of you who think Sweetman is doing a good job here is a statistic to turn your stomach over.

Slough played 27, points 30, the windsor scum played 27, points 62.

Things have got that bad that sweetman cant even manage half the points of the slug meadow boys.

We now have people on here suggesting that he should have 5 games into next season to prove himself, he should have gone after christmas as he has failed to use the players and finances he has. That is one of the top four playing budgets and a team that contains the leagues top goal scorer from last year.

The man does not have a clue and he needs to go!

I disagree, Windsor are far better than us, they have at least a season on us and so I am not worried that they have been doing better than us this year.

I'm with Mark, Sweetman needs to be given time, changing the manager before the end of the season would not be helpful.
