Many of you will recall the popular thread from last year leading up to the 2008 Oscars, so here we go again with this years nominations. Has anybody seen any of the films, Lato must have done:

Gawd, I hope that if Kate Winslet wins yet again, we don't get YET ANOTHER weepy stupid speech !

I think the speeches are very much part and parcel of the Oscars and often the highlight, who can forget Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry.

I see that Peter Gabriel has thrown all his toys out of the pram after finding out his performance as one of the best song nominees would be limited to 65 seconds, I bet he still attends the ceremony though:

So who is going to be glued to their tv screens in the early hours of the morning to see whether Kate Winslet does the business, fingers crossed.

Ron Howard played Ritchie Cunningham from Happy Days and directed Apollo 13 and The Da Vinci Code among others.

Danny Boyle is best known for Trainspotting and Shallow Grave

David Fincher directed many landmark films such as Se7en and Fight Club.

Stephen Daldry directed Biully Elliot and The Hours both of which he was previously nominated for an Oscar for best director for

Gus Van Sant was also previously nominated for Good Will Hunting.

So there you go, all accomplished directors in their own right. Just because you've never heard of them because they don't direct the kind of blockbuster film you are familar with does not mean they are not deserving of an Oscar nomination.

As for the people you listed, well I guess they just didn't make anything good this year!!

glad that Man on Wire got an award. A truly remarkable film about a truly remarkable man achieving something staggering. My film of the year and well worth checking out as a welcome change from all the Hollywood stodge.

I see there ws never any acknowledgement of my comments on the nominated best director, thought it might start an interesting debabte.

Anyway last night I went to see another Oscar nominated film by a master of modern cinema namely Katyn directed by Andrezj Wajda. Its a harrowing adaptation of the story of the murder of 22000 Polish officers and Intellectuals by the Russian Secret Police in 1940. It is a difficult film to watch but I recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in WW2 and the political intricacies of that conflict, though and I admit my heritage influences me here, I feel it is a film that should be seen by a much wider audience than it will be. The last 15 minutes or so is particularly devastating and it left last nights audience in total respectful silence that continued throughout the credits through to the lights going up - a remarkable phenomenon I've never seen before in a cinema.
