Billericay Sports

I am hoping comeone on this forum can help - is there any connection with Billericay Town to a club called Billericay Sports?

As far as I can gather, Billericay Sports played in the 1960s, but I have no information on them at all, or whether they are / were connected with Billericay Town.

And - what league(s) did Billericay Town play in the the 50s and 60s?

Yes. I have some progs from 1960 when the club were playing next to the Archer Hall. The programme says Billericay Town "Sports Club" rather than "Football Club".

They were playing in the Chelmsford and Mid Essex League Premier Divison that season and wearing "Old Gold & Blue" kits.

I'm 97% certain that was us. Although I suppose there's an outside chance there was a BTFC and an entirely unconnected BTSC both playing on the same ground.

Alas I am but a young whippersnapper so was not around at the time to see.

I am also sure its the same club. I also have a 60/61 home programme for Billericay Town Sports Club. This is for the Chelmsford & Mid Essex Football League (Premier Division). This contadicts the club web site that has us in the Southern Essex Combination League at that time.

I also have a programme dated 14 March 1971 for the "Top Ten XI" v Billericay Town fund raising game at New Lodge. This includes a brief history headed "Billericay Town Sports Club" that includes the information that "About 10 years ago the Club changed its name to Billericay Town Sports Club with the idea in mind to expand their range of sporting and social activities for the people of the Town".

It would be interesting to know for how long the club played in Old Gold.

Thanks for the info - on the subject of programmes, when did Billericay first issue them?

And on the same topic, the oldest I have is Ongar v Billericay on 30/1/60 in the Chelmsford and Mid Essex Lge - but it is against Billericay and not Billericay Town, though this could easily be a mistake as clubs were not too particular about putting the full title of the opposition (ie they used to leave out Town, Utd, and so on).

Apart from the 60-61 programmes and the fund raising games (in 68-69, 70-71 and 72-73) the earliest programme I have is for 73-74 season in the Old FA Amateur Cup. This consists of three folded stapled sheets that look standard for the whole season and a loose centre page unique to the game.

Programmes for the 1978-79 season include on the cover Volume No 6 and an issue number implying that 72-73 was the first season of regular issues. I've no idea if 60-61 was a one off season or if Billericay Town continued issuing during the rest of the 1960's.

I'm getting jealous reading about all these old programmes!!! Any chance to have a photocopy taken of some of these? Send me a PM if so! I would like to put some of the info up at the norwegian website's history pages.

One more thing: I have also discovered that some of the info about when playing which league is not 100% correct. That includes both the 30's, 50's and 60's. I've heard about Billericay Sports and thibk I have some information about in somewhere...

I'm told the reason that the club went by 'Billericay Sports' was (as you might expect) because they also fielded teams in other sports - Among them cricket IIRC.

I think it was Jim Hall that told me that one of the big names from the Vase years (possibly Steve Bone - I forget unfortunately) also turned out for the cricket team. So the whole 'Sports Club' thing must have lasted a while.

Thank God for the internet and the ability to email Per-Helge. My not so long ago the easiest way of getting an old programme to Norway might have been to dispatch a member of the New Lodge based Billericay Town Pigeon Club on a special mission. Hee, Hee, Hee, Hee, Hee!

I've finally got round to launching the Retro section, so you can now see scans of one of Lokomotiv's progs from 1960. Thanks Loko!

More to come in the coming days, weeks and months.

And if you've got something old and crusty and BTFC related - please let me know.

I have some newspaper copies from 1964 and 1965 and at that time Billericay Town was playing in the Mid-Essex League. They hade five teams, one in the premier, one in first and one in the second division, and two teams competing in the Chelmsford & District League. The club amalgamed with Billericay Rangers before this season, so maybe it was during this they changed the name back to Billericay Town Football Club?

I also think that capt Ballard mentioned on the team sheet of the 1960-programme could be Tony Ballard. He still played for the club 1964/65, on the second team, and was the top scorer with 21 goals in april 1965.
