The pitch

I know this is a totally boring subject but how did it hold up today and has the drainage worked. I got the news on Friday that all Thanet Sunday league matches on council pitches have been cancelled. I felt that it was a stupid decision that Thanet leisureforce took and the league took. After our recent frosty weather many of our matches have been cancelled. DeVille are in the last 16 of the kent cup, had a good run in the challenge cup and still have the league cup to compete in. We now have 4 games in hand over those above us. It looks like we may be playing matches well into July at this rate.

Its really frustrating!!!

Considering we had an almighty downpour on Friday & from before that surface water was already showing, the pitch looked superb. 70/30 against i.m.o on Friday.

Luckily the rain kept away up to kick off which gave the drainage a chance to do its work.A super groundsman to help things along obviously helps too.

All told & taking everything into consideration the pitch stood up well I thought.

I notice the rains re-appeared after the game & today. Were we destined to play & win? Just an after-thought!.

A bit milder, evenings drawing out now and the odd glimpse of sun, so grass will start to grow again.

No home game for two weeks i think, and if thats a dry saturday, then from mid Feb the pitch should really start to recover and look good for rest of season.

Unless Feb is exceptionally wet on match days, then i reckon the pitch has 'made it' through the season and all credit to all involved .

The question is-have we got the players to take advantage of one of the best pitches in the ryman?

Better playing conditions will probably suit the 'Gate more than most teams

Paul H - I don't think it is a totally boring subject (and I think that the Hartsdown pitch is great) but your point about Thanet Leisureforce is something about which I have often thought.

Without wishing to be considered one of those people who thinks that everything was better years ago (alright, I may well be I suppose) I have often wondered just why there are so many postponements nowadays.

Years ago I can well remember playing on pitches in the East Kent area when the ground was either like a bog or concrete. It could also have been chucking it down, freezing cold, or in the case of Hartsdown on at least one occasion I am sure with a covering of snow (I was a spectator at that one and I have a sneaking feeling that the game was the Reserves v Betteshanger CW Reserves).

I know that the game is played at greater speed today so perhaps that has something to do with the reason for postponements ie health and safety and consequently compensation culture.

Anyone else had similar thoughts?

I don't think so Fanet Blu. We've got a good squad and there's no reason why we can't win this league and take the kent cup this season. However what does annoy me is the fact that we pay good money to play on these council pitches. Thanet leisureforce do nothing to look after the pitches. In the summer there were 2 pitches used at jackey bakers for friendlies. They turned the pitches around 90 degrees over pitches 6 and 7. When they put the pitches back for the season to start they didn't fill in the existing goal post holes, leaving them exposed for players to turn there ankles or worse. We've just started playing on a new pitch in Hartsdown park. Its just next to the 5 a side centre. A few days before the game I went up to look at the pitch. Thanet leisureforce left the old 16th hole teeing off mat in the 18 yard area from the old golf course. Now on our travels this season I've played against a few Canterbury sides in the Kent Cup. They spike the pitches to help with drainage, and I am told that they re-sead the grass on the summer especially in the goalmouths. Thanet Leisureforce want to get to grips with those that look after the football grounds and we (the clubs)are paying customers. Currently they don't seem to give 2 s**ts. We pay

Its the same with the council in the summer Paul, for the cricket season. They dont prepare the pitches properly but the cost of hiring goes up year after year.

Thanet Leisureforce thinks that Tivoli has cricket and football pitches on it..............funny I thought that the cricket was in Hartsdown Park as there is a divide between the two parks.

Having tried to book and pay for a pitch last year and all the hassles I had for that plus during the summer two years ago they could not rent out tennis courts at all as both Margate and Ramsgate courts were being used for storage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The company is as inept as the council that employs them

I agree Frankie. They named the new pitch in Hartsdown park Tivoli 2. Whats that all about!!!

I expect they cancelled all those matches without even inspecting the pitches. Im sure Tivoli 1 was playable because of the natural slope. I'm sure Garlinge 4 was playable because of the slope and probably 1 or 2 pitches at Jackey Bakers. The only game that survived was that at St Lukes. That pitch is one of the worst for waterlogging.
