Game(s) OFF today

Recommended Posts

As Coves groundsman i feel i have to reply to the postings on this thread. The pitch was rolled Friday afternoon with rain forecast it was always going to be a risky operation but given there had been two midweek matches on it i had little alternative.Heavy overnight rain then made the pitch more waterlogged than it would usually have been.Forking away puddles is fine if they are localised,ie.centre spots, six yard boxes, but the water on it at 9AM when i was there made forking out of the question.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but a decision had to be made early not when the opposing team have already arrived so i made it.I hope this satisfies everyone including our club captain.

Satisfied.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing as you said, and after getting into trouble last week for allowing NGU to travel when there was no matches on at all in the league with the big freeze, calling the game off was probably the only option at the time.

I didnt see the pitch at 10am but can imagine it was so much more flooded than when i saw it for the 1st time at 1pm.

At 2pm the pitch could have been forked and the water brushed away but there was no guarantee that this would be possible when seeing it in the morning. Hard decisions have to be made.

In response to 'Number One's' comment about Cove's pitch....

the pitch was brilliant at the start of the season for 3 months until the HW match in which we had an absolute downpour the whole 2nd half. The pitch is still in very good condition considering the amount of football played on it during a full week of matches.

No team has yet to complain about our pitch. I would prefer to play on the Cove pitch than play on 75% of the other teams pitches. Credit has to go to the groundsman at Cove for keeping the pitch in top condition. I'm suprised you dont pull the little hair you have left on your head out when seeing the amount of matches per week on the pitch. You must feel like banging your head against a wall. If i had my way it would be just the 1st team and ressies on it!!

Just to pass on some early info about the Cove pitch with regards to tomorrows rescheduled match versus Banstead Athletic.

At this moment in time the pitch is severely under water and flooded. If the match was tonight the game would certainly be off.

I will be going down there tomorrow to look at the pitch and do some work if needed to get the match on.

I will post on here when i have some more info!!

I haven't looked at Meadowbank today, but if our local estate pitch is anything to go by, there'll have to be one hell of a lot of drying out for Bookham tomorrow evening !

Responsibilities as a captain mate.

Dont think we've ever had a skipper at Ash United thats ever heard of the word 'responsibilities', do you??

Hope Jamie is on the mend by the way.

I see Corinthian-Casuals home game was off last Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch, so not holding out much hope for tomorrow evening's Surrey Senior Cup match....
