After being transferred back to the Maternity Unit last night, Jess is now back in the ITU/HDU again as her blood count waas a bit low. Our elation did not last very long. One good thing her Kidneys are working a little bit better now thank goodness.

This shows the need for us all to help in even a small way.

Make the effort to visit the Blood Donors.

It cost nothing except time and could help others like Jess.

visit http://www.blood.co.uk/ for your nearest session.

Think of it as a way to thank the NHS for looking after one of our own.

I am going on my way home tonight.

Last time and on another occasion in Plymouth I could not give blood as "I had not made an appointment".

The number of donors will fall as the appointment system has been adopted. I first gave blood many years ago in a clinic in Southbury Road. I walked in and donated without appointment. I have since kept around 60% of the invitations to attend. When I cant attend I drop into a donor site when I see one.

Appointments cannot work for people like me whose time is valuable and work commitments will always come first. It will not allow for the "drop in donor" and merely allows those that have organised lives to arrange their affairs even easier. The doning service appears unaccountable as I have raised this issue on many occasions and not had a satisfactory reply.

Excellent idea EU, bring in a mobile unit three times a season.

Steph every time I give blood I make my next appointment before I leave, always the same time at the same place, couldnt be easier.

Jess had to come of Dialysis as her blood was clotting. She is on medication to help her kidneys and they are now beginning to work, not 100% but at least it is a start.

Her health is now beginning to improve as is her blood count. We are still not quite out of the woods yet, but I think we can now start to see the finish line.

Many thanks for all you kind words we really appreciate them.

Gaza.

Many people think of their own situation and extrapolate that to everyone else.

I am self employed and work on the basis of instructions. I have to make appointments to meet people in their homes. Sheila and I often have difficulty fitting in holidays and certainly cannot plan a holiday more than 2 months in advance.

I dont think I am the only one. With blood doning there is nothing simpler than receiving an invitation to give blood and then when seeing a blood doning site going in and giving blood. Doing the old chair routine could be easier if you was given a number but since most people knew the routine it worked.

What there is now is those with ordered lives make appointments and the rest can go hang. In this way it is my view that the number of donors will decrease,

Last time I turned up I was turned away now something is wrong there somewhere.

I have never used an appointment and I have always just turned up and waited for my name to be called.

I consider to be a time to switch off the mobile phone and just sit back and relax.

Steph, I hope you dont think I was having a pop because I wasnt, my wife & I make our appointment for around 7pm, that way I am fairly well sure to get there in time as I travel home from London, the unit we go to in Cambourne stays open until 9pm, now I know thats not the same everywhere but at the same time it cant be the only place that does, it is always busy but as Bru says they also operate a system for those without appointments that they can squeeze in.
