"Respect" pre-match handshakes

Does anyone feel, as I do, that the players pre-match handshakes are an absolute waste of time?

I have long thought this as players shake hands and then we watch fouls, yellow and red cards for the next 90 minutes. Today's game capped it for me when within about three minutes of the start a Harlow player committed a blatant foul for which he was quite rightly given a yellow card.

As far as I am concerned the pre-match handshakes should be abandoned and replaced with handshakes in the same format after the match has finished.

And bring those players that have been sent off back on to shake hands.

Just look at what followed. Blokes chasing across the park to foul and hurt people. At Xmas too!

Hope the respect project works, sad to see the excocet missile launched by harlows no 7 , I think he was completely clear of the ground during his flight. Extremely lucky for him and his target that he missed. Seemed to be out of desperation rather than anything else, very sad moment, he was one of their better players until then. Hope he apologised afterwards.

I am pleased to read that but it doesn't change my overall view.

Whilst agreeing with the principle that "every little helps" I really feel that the handshakes before the match are pointless.

Yesterday was a prime example and I wonder how many handshakes there would have been after the game, not grudgingly/routinely made, if my suggestion was taken up.

Respect is something that people have to earn in the long term - not just a couple of minutes before a football match.

I appreciate the comments made by the director re their Chairman's fury.

"I also believe it adds to the 'spectacle of the occasion '.

it is entertainment after all"

Sorry, just do not agree with that and what you have written says it all. My understanding is that the idea is to generate respect not just to add to the spectacle of the occasion and entertainment value.

On that basis we might as well have lap dancers/the Chippendales etc going round the ground first, plus a couple of comedians, a band, you name it, whatever type of genuine entertainment you want.

Shaking hands to generate respect is not entertainment or a spectacle and should be taken seriously.

Absolutely right and personally I would be delighted to see something like that, make every MFC game a days entertainment with the football as the highlight, but of course the cost would put the price of admission up.

However, I still don't see the handshakes and respect as entertainment
