SAWBO BOSS QUITS

Sawbridgeworth Town player-manager Richard Branchflower has resigned as he felt it had become 'impossible' to work with the committee at the Essex Senior League club.

Branchflower, who took on the job in July 2007 when Don Watters quit in similar circumstances, became increasingly frustrated with interference from above into team selection.

He said: "We had a massive difference of opinion and I couldn't work with the committee any longer.

"I was trying to field a senior side and they were putting pressure on me to use the youth section when players are a million miles away from being ready for senior football.

"I was looking to recruit senior players to enable us to compete in the senior league but the committee wanted us to use only home-grown players.

"It was a big decision for me as the lads I was working with are really committed. I enjoyed working with them, but the committee made it impossible for me.

"It was said in a meeting they didn't care if we lose by big scores every week and finish bottom as long as we field young players. I wouldn't have that and those young players who may be good enough in the future would be mentally ruined by coming in too early and getting hammered every week."

Branchflower is unsure what the future holds for him.

"I am taking time out and will think about things in the New Year," he said.

Chairman Steve Day added: "I thought Richard would carry on until the end of the season, but football is not his life and if he isn't enjoying it it's understandable."
