Horrific incident

Not sure how well publicised this is but I read it with shear horror in yesterday's NLP.

A 43 year old player from a Sunday League club in the Hayes (middx) area died after a post match incident involving his team and the opposition.

What are things coming to when you go out to play a game of Sunday morning football (like many of us have done of the years. I suppose it is classed as a hobby) and finish up dead. Ok with any sport, there is always there is always a small risk of serious injury/fatal injury through a freak accident but this is something else.

When you consider that "park football" is the most exposed in terms of lack of security etc it is even more important that at the end of 90 mins everybody shakes hands and any feuds end there.

I suggest that what has happened here is consistent with a wider society problem and unfortunately has an all too familiar outcome (i.e. fights on our streets which nowadays end up in deaths instead of a few black eyes). Football has to get its house in order but I think it just another vehicle for a much wider issue.

My thoughts go out to the family and friends of the poor chap concerned.

For the greater good of the game, all those involved have a duty to act responsibly when taking part. Finishing up dead is not part of a Sunday morning recreational activity.

This is really sad to read. I feel football should come together and agree to a minutes silence to serve in the memory of Stephen, plus act as a reminder to all players/officials and fans at every level the tragedy that can evolve from hot headed moments of rage.

Stephen Ritchie may he RIP.

Regards
