One club can rise up by paying out money to hire, rent, groundshare in a nomadic style with no roots in the community, and one established community sports club goes downwards despite trying to spend and raise money to transform a derelict wasteland into a community sports venue that will benefit local schools.

I hope the league is doing something to assist Warlingham, and ensuring MVSCR don't become another neasden foundation.

The MVSCR chairman'scomment re clubs standing still and going nowhere is a valid point but, as he points out, a lot of this is down to the inability of clubs toimprove their facilities either due to lack of cash or council backing.

It is good to see that his 5 year plan includes ground improvements although another Ryman club in Leatherhead competing for support will be challenging.

Can't help thinking that the council re Warlingham may have another agenda for that site.

it was the manager's comment CC but it seems to be a Salmon's family run club.

"I said when we decided to make the move to Saturday football, that I would only do it if we continued to progress and move forward," said Salmon.

"When we were accepted into the CCL at the start of this season, my goal was the Ryman League within five seasons.

Id be interested to hear from those who are involved, but whats going to happen if MVSCR dont progress, don't make the Ryman in 5 years?

further quotes

I don't understand the point of being involved in the pyramid of non-league football if you're not interested in going as far as you can.

"Without being disrespectful to other teams in this league there are plenty of clubs playing at this level who are happy to stay still, to stay at this standard of football.

there's only one gets out each year, and some have gone as far as they can.

the point of them doing it is they are playing football and giving the likes of MVSCR a game.

Its ok to say "without being disrespectful" but I find it arrogant after a few months of victories to start criticising the likes of Farnham Town, Warlingham and others.

Hi All

Interesting debate you are having, and yes, i am going to take the bait and dive right in

I can see your points TSF, yes Warlingham are an established club, and we have just appeared on the scene, but I don't think that we should be punished / held back just because of our circumstances. Darren saw an opportunity to move the club forward and has taken it.

I have played with Darren (the manager) since the heady heights of the Mitcham and District Sunday Division 2, and he has always had a dream of taking his club into a decent level of Saturday football (as you rightly point out, it is a family side - founded by Alan - who is now chairman, and with Darren and Justin running the 1st and Reserves), but as I sure you can appreciate, not all Sunday sides have their own grounds and have to make do with any local park, we were no different. In order for us to progress we did need to find a ground and obviously the tie up with Mole Valley Predators offered us that opportunity.

On some of Darren's quotes, to be honest, I see nothing wrong with setting out his ambitions for the club, and if, at the end of the 5 year period we are not in the Ryman league (which, knowing the standard of the CCL Premier and Div 1, is going to be a hell of an achievement), then we would re-assess and set fresh targets. From where we came from to where we are now is something that the club is rightly proud of, and to have a side performing consistently in the CCL is our initial aim.

I can also see why you think Darren is being disrespectful, but believe me, as a new side into the CCL we appreciate that we need to build good relationships with the sides we are playing both on and off the pitch. I am sure he was more highlighting our ambitions rather than intentionally knocking other clubs.

If you don't agree with the way MVSCR have moved forward then fine, but we are not going to be a one / two season wonder, the Salmon's have put to much into the club to let that happen.

Now, feel free to rip me apart as you see fit....

FWIW - I have utmost sympathy with Warlingham, whenever I have played against them, they have always gone about things in the right way, and seem a truly friendly, community club - I hope, that when they appeal they get the right result.

Totally agree briggers, just seen the respone to the article and can see why you think he's being direpectful TSF, but he's not just very passionate bout his club. We know we are the new boys to this league and who says we will get promoted this year? we are going into each game as underdogs, as skipper thats what i tell them, also we have total respect to all the clubs we play. As for doing a neasdon i dont think that will happen. I have been one of Darrens players for the promotions through the leagues, and the club is ours not just the Salmons, we have helped with all the ground improvements and will continue to do so as the club is full of pals on and off the pitch. Also i live in warlingham so wish them best of luck in their fight.

Well, you still have to face the resurgent Chicks home and away so that's 6 points you'd better not budget for wink

Seriously though, nothing wrong with ambitions and good luck to you. Only concern I can see is getting the fans in. Look at long established Leatherhead with all their tradition, they struggle to get 200 these days in Ryman 1.

Having first hand knowledge and experience of River Lane from a few years ago and seeing what it's like now i think Mole Valley SCR should be applauded. A hell of a lot of work, effort and money has been put in to the ground and they seem a very enthusiastic bunch. Having played against a few of them last season on Sunday's they seem like a good bunch as well.

The Div 1 title race could be just as exciting as the Prem one this season i reckon.

briggers and gertcha, thanks for your replies.

so you know, i often quote from the Advertiser and try to start some chat. I realise that the guy getting quoted just gets a phone call and talks and then its down in black and white and gospel, three quotes out of a ten minute talk. It's happened to me.

So its good to discuss it and see what the truth is.

Well done to MVSCR on their rise and commitment, and a great start to the season.

I hope to hear more from you guys about the last few seasons.

how do you feel about playing in Fetcham, and do you still feel like a club attached to the other sides?

Does River lane have a clubhouse the club could call home, or do you all race back to your old haunts?

Is river lane rented by the club direct from the council?

Is it your future base or would you groundshare whereever suits?

I am a Dorking guy, and I initially felt coco 1 was a bloody insult for our club to be playing in. But we are there because of on pitch performance and so are MVSCR. There are some established town clubs, some village clubs who may not be able to stay, and some sides who are there because they have had a good team for a couple of years.

Of those Ive visited South Park are doing a great job all round, Farnham are cheated out of progression on a ground formality, Warlingham looking frustrated with the council. As I say Dorking are in div 1 on playing merit, but they should never have got this far down . Its a long hard climb out, and there are many sides trying.

clubs like farnham frimley green and ourselves ( Westfield ) all established clubs in the prem were put down due to off the pitch events. Now you can argue that it was our fault due to not getting a move on with the ground but all clubs have just got on with things and tried to progress again
