Just announced that he has died.

 

I used to love 'On the buses'.

It's a sad day, the 'I Hate You Butler' catchphrase is up there with 'Are You Free', 'You Dirty Old Man' 'You Plonker Rodney', 'Don't Panic' and 'They Don't Like It Up Em'. I gather Varney was 92 so he had a good innings compared to other comedian actors however he will be greatly missed. RIP.

I'd love to see a re run of On The Buses as a tribute.

RIP you dirty old man...he was about 55 when he was doing on the buses.....chasing 19 year olds around.....

Correct, Greg. The UK's first ATM was at Barclays in Enfield Town, and was ceremonially opened (if you see what I mean) by Mr Varney. There is a little plaque thing there commemorating this momentous event.

 

The present day machines are on a different wall round the corner from where the original was (or they were last time I was there).

Reg lived in Enfield. For those of you that know the area he used to live in the big white house on Clay Hill in between the Rose & Crown pub and the junction with Baker STreet (very close to my gaff). I remeber working in Curry's in the Town centre he used to be a regular customer and was always dealt with by the boss. An excellent comic actor. On the Buses was superb. RIP.

Me and my then girlfriend used to see him on the putting green right opposite his house on sunday mornings . He always had that smile on his face . I'm surprised he was 92 I would have said early 70s at most . A great comic actor and fondly remembered .
