On a very wet and windy afternoon a make shift young Margate side, battled hard but some good finishing by Herne Bay saw them through to the next round of the Division 1/2 cup.

In the 4th minute a long kick by Pat Mullin found Jimmy McClean who ran through and chipped the goalie but saw his effort then cleared off the line by a Bay defender. Bay then had their first attack in the 12th minute when the speedy Michael Turner, who caused the Margate defence all sorts of problems, ran through the defence and slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

The lead was short lived, however, when the Bay defence made a hash of clearing the ball two minutes later and Shane Brown latched onto it and calmly hit the ball over the keeper's head into the net. Mullin then made a good save when a dangerous cross came over from Jack Winder and he palmed it away to safety. Chris Lewis then put McClean through but his shot, though well struck, was well saved by Shaun Smith who pushed it past his right post.

In the 40th minute Bay retook the lead When a croos by Chris Parry found Joe Nelder completely unmarked in the middle of the area who slotted the ball home. A minute from halftime Brown went on a good run on the left and chipped the ball over the advancing keeper but saw it hit the post and roll to safety.

Second half saw the wind and rain decrease and Margate found themselves pinned back for most of the half. In the 55th minute, Simon Moore took a free kick which flashed past the right hand post, though Mullin seemed to have it covered. Four minutes later Margate had a chance to equalise when Sam Noble found Paul Axon on the right who put over a cross finding Brown but his header was pushed wide.

A minute later Bay clinched the game when Stephen Baines crossed from the right and the Gate defence, once again, failed to pick up Joe Nelder who hit the ball home.

Team: Mullin, Albrecht, Gibson, Argyrides, Lewis, Noble, Axon, Vanhinsberg, Brown (Gray 75th min), McClean, Payne. Unused subs: Morrell, Taylor
