From www.yourthanet.co.uk:

A Kick Racism out of Football event held in Margate attracted more than 100 young people.

The day, held at Margate Football Club, aimed at getting the anti racism campaign message across to sports fans.

A five-a-side competition run by Thanet council and Margate FC was part of the event and 80 young people took part.

Drama workshops, music and art projects and other sports activities were also put on.

Cllr. Jo Gideon, cabinet member for safer neighbourhoods, health and communities, said:

Looking at the parties involved I would suspect that it was not an open event per se but one targetted at specific areas to ensure a good turn out and, more importantly, an understanding of the purpose.

Judging by the fact that Unison made it possible it would also seem that Margate FC was used was for the purpose of the football as a separate hire to the other events taking part during the day.

Maybe I am wrong but I don't think we should unduly criticise MFC if they have just been part of the event.

I don't agree. There is PR capital to be made through association with a positive event at a facility made possible through investment linked to the club.

Having organised similar events (not with that particular theme) over the years, the point that I was making was simply that it may not have been an "open" event, which people think might have been the case, and therefore questions such as "when is the next one", with respect might not have been relevant. The event may simply have been targetted in an area, say schools, youth groups etc.

In any event a) MFC must have done something right to get it there as opposed to losing it to another venue and B) it got the publicity for it anyway so why the problems?

It doesn't matter when whether it was a outside agency. The fact is that MFC failed to use it. It didn't have to be done before the event, and I find it hard to believe that this sort of thing would want to be done behind closed doors!!!

Like I said, MFC got the gig, which brought in some important money, and got the publicity. If it was organised by someone else then it is up to them who goes.

MFC must have done something right in the first place to get the gig.

And by virtue of yourthanet they have got some publicity.

So, they got the gig, got the money, got the publicity. Unless everyone is going to insist that every hire made by the club is advertised, is there anything really wrong?

its easy to criticise-and maybe marginally more could have been made of it-but it does seem that there is a slightly bigger matter occupying the directors at the moment-and if everyone is completely honest with themselves-what would they have actually done personally to make it a better event.

Personally-had i been aware in advance-i would have thought-'thats interesting'-done dilly squat- and got on selfishly with my own life-so i can hardly criticise the club
