In front of Terry Yorath, a mixture of reserves and first team fringe players, including Pat Mullins returning from injury after a nine week lay off, Margate completely outplayed a gutsy Hythe Town of the park with some scintillating football at times.

Aaron Quaine had the first chance in the 5th minute when his free kick on the right of the area curled just past the left hand post. Joe Taylor, who had a commanding game in midfield just behind the front two, then hit a hard shot but Jon Sparks saved well. In the 16th minute Luke Coleman picked the ball up on the left side and looking up saw Sparks of his line and put a delicate lob over his head to put his side one up.

Six minutes later Margate increased their lead when a throw in by Nick Treadwell was held up by Johnny Greaves, pushing the ball back to the on rushing Kieran Morris, who fired in a terrific shot from 25 yards into the bottom right hand corner. Hythe had their first real attack in the 27th minute when the speedy Darren Walmsley looked like he had broken through but Ryan Harker put in a great challenge inside the area just as a goal looked likely.

In the 30th minute Taylor on the left turned inside his defender and hit a shot which fizzed towards goal but Sparks flung himself to his left and just got his finger tips to it. Greaves then went on a run on the left side, went past two defenders and hit a great shot but saw it hit the crossbar. Elliott Payne then got into the act when his shot just curled over the bar.

Pat Mullins then made his only real save of the match in the 52nd minute when Stuart Daffin hit a shot which looked like it was curling in, but Mullins threw himself to his right tipping it around the post. This spurred Margate back into action and a lovely cross from Payne was met by Johnny Greaves who looped his header over Sparks into the net to put Margate three up in the 56th minute.

Five minutes laterAaron Quaine then went on a run on the left twisting and turning into the area, before threading the ball past the advancing Sparks to put his side four up. Taylor then threaded a through ball to Greaves who was one on one with Sparks but his chip went straight into the goalies hands. In the 72nd minute Paul Axon put over a dangerous cross which came off a Hythe defender to Johnny Greaves who gleefully hit it into the net from close range to complete the rout.

Coleman then picked the ball up on the left and turned towards goal firing in a shot which was well saved by Sparks. He then met a good cross from Quaine but saw his header go just wide of the left post.

Team: Mullins, Harker, Payne, Argyridges, Treadwell (Gibson 75th minute), Morris, Axon, Taylor ( Brown 78th minute), Coleman, Greaves, Quaine. Unused subs: Stokes, Clarke, Beresford.

Thanks BGA.

have'nt heard much about parrish and cliffe recently-if i remember rightly-they were originally signed in the summer on ryman forms ?

I guess only 16 can play at any one time-and we do seem to have 'quantity 'in our reserve squads
