Quick Questions

Saw Dave interviewed on Sky as well, perked me up after the performance yesterday.

"Billy" was a class act and was all set to follow Dave to Crystal Palace before a serious knee injury damaged his career. Very loyal servant for the club, one of the few who stuck around after the demotion from the Conference and played against Sutton in the scratch team that grabbed a 1-0 win against the champions elect. Earns him legend status in my book.

And a thoroughly nice bloke.

I agree with you on my things Wiz but your attitude at times and the way you talk about supporters, management and some players is contemptible.

Disagree with you there,if you went to say Arsenal and said "Senderos you are not up to it-not good enough" as he is being paid, and the fact you paid to watch, no one would bat an eye lid.But if you say that on here about some Slough players or manager, even though its patently obvious-then we get all the silly replies or snide remarks instead of proper debates, and this can only be because it don't suit these people,or more likely they cannot debate things, also what seems to nark a lot of them is that because we have seen it and done most of it, some how we are wrong. Yet to me its like teenagers who think nothing ever happened before they came along. So yes my attitude may seem a bit off.

I have noticed that when the Burnham manager left/resigned recently many of the same people on here never had a good word to say about him-and that appeared ok in their book.At least I am consistent in my views.

There is no set rule that says one player is a legend another isnt. It`s what makes football great you can debate it and still people will never agree! For example Trevor Bunting is one of our most capped players but would he be a legend? I have been watching Slough reguarly for 20 years I started coming at the age of 12/13 so I cant comment on the players before that era. In my opinion though I remember Billy being one of our best players and most creative players during our conference days. Not wanting to stir up any more arguments but would be interested on your opinions Wiz on some of our players during the conference years and whether any of them would be considered as legends in your book. Players of the like of Andy Sayer, Paul Mckinnon, Mark Fiore, Steve Thompson, Gary Brazil, Alan Paris

Wiz I appreciate that there have been better players to pull on the Slough shirt, I know for the fact that there have been. I've even seen some of them play. But it was the way you dismissed Billy that is contemptible.

Football is all about opinion and I have explained to you why I consider Billy a legend yet you offer nothing back except weird comparison to Arsenal and Mudgie.

From each era there will be players who could be classed as legends but the eras themselves cannot be compared save for in the most basic ways.

The last ten years have been the worst in the clubs history but I would argue that Daly would still earn a legend tag. He is certainly not the best centre half I have seen for Slough and would be way down the all time list. But any player who stays with one club for ten years and puts in the effort that Steve has would rightfully earn that tag. Particularly given that we must have used 200 players in that time!

Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it but you do actually have to live in the present.

Martin.

"Football is all about opinion and I have explained to you why I consider Billy a legend yet you offer nothing back except weird comparison to Arsenal and Mudgie."

You have got the posts mixed up-the bit about Arsenal and Mudgie was in answer to your previous post-nothing to do with Fiore.

But in my opinion Fiore was a good left footed player, and yes when on song was very good, all I am saying is that to me he is not a legend-how is that contemptible.

As for Daly are we judging on longevity or greatness ability wise.

Perhaps I can shed a bit of light on why some of your comments feel "contemptible" - it's the fact that the judgements you pass on players and others are incredibly quick, blunt, and 'black and white' - though you have since explained why you believe Fiore doesn't make your legend's grade...

Personally, I find it interesting that you complain that others shoot you down in flames whenever you put your point forward, yet you call for the need to debate - surely that means that when some question your opinion, they are simply engaging in a debate?

As one who has only followed STFC for 6 years I like hearing stories about the "golden years", perhaps RWG/Wiz could help contribute some articles for the programmes on the years I wasn't here for?

But at the same time, I think it's more profitable to concentrate on the here and now, particularly for a club in the current state of peril ours is in. I also believe in constructive critiscism, rather than flagrant insults (which is in no way directed at RWG - simply an observation about some of the comments on this board of late). Here's for a return to healthy, constructive debate about football!

Yep, couldn't agree more.

To simply say about Billy Fiore "long way off being a legend" really irked me.

It is comments like that make people question your motivation and whether or not you are true supporter. I don't know anyone who supported the club in the 90s, young or old, former pro or enthusiastic amateur, who has anything but respect for Fiore and what he achieved for the club. There is no doubt he would have played in the Football League as a full-time pro but for his knee injury which just shows he had considerable ability and stood out at our level.

In respect of Daly, longevity is his greatest attribute. In a time of turmoil at our club he has been a rock regardless of the fact his legs have gone.

In respect of getting in a legends team, Thompson probably is the only player of the past twenty years who would but that is due to a combination of factors. Had the team of 97/98 stayed together many of those may well have pushed for inclusion but we will never know. One of the many imponderables of looking at football through the ages and an example of why we shouldn't hark back to yesteryear and should just get on with supporting the club in its current guise.

I can only answer that where as you may have seen these new players at the odd game in the past-I have seen them many times in my part time scouting capacity-so yes my judgements were quick and black and white-if you are watching a player to recommend him to a higher club, then others will also be watching at some point-so judgements tend to be fairly quick. As for being blunt do you think that if I am entitled to an opinion about the club I have supported all my life, and care deeply about, that my opinion should be honest as I see it-I do.I see no point saying some one is good when they patently are not, and have had a fair chance to prove it.What I don't understand is how many games do you want to give the players who don't fit the bill or for that matter the manager.Because you obviously know that getting relegated now would be a major disaster.

Yeah but I am not trying to compare the two players. Thompson was a class act, I saw him play for us many times, but did not see the Saltash game. He was stand out quality but that type of player comes along very very rarely for a club like Slough. That said Thompson is some what tarnished for me because of who he left us for.
