Referees and other animals

Some interesting views on previous threads about what we do with referees. An interesting point re letters to the league after each game. I think if clubs feel the referee has had a poor game they should write a letter in. Not because they gave 1 decision you didnt agree with in the 90th minute of the game though !!

Also I think that all managers should be required to do the Refs course so they have a knowledge of the laws of the game as they are rather than how they feel they should be.

I would also be interested to know how many managers in this league have done any coaching badges ?

WE say this time and again but there needs to be open dialogue between officials and the players and managers. It should be two way. An official should listen to questions asked or opinions given in the correct manner. And in return the person asking the question should have the decency to listen to the reply and opinion in the correct manner.

I feel that we have not yet had a referee that has had a shocking game. Yes the referee and linesman have made some poor decisions in 2 of our games but then we had some favourable decisions along the way too. Surely over the season, if you're absolutely honest with your self, the bad decisions you get are usually evened up with the decisions you probably are fortunate to get. If that makes sense???

I think that the captain has a lot to answer for during a game. If he controls himself and also his players then a lot of sending offs and silly bookings can be avoided.

The referee always has his little chat with the 2 skippers before kick off telling us that he will speak to the captain about a player on their last warning and for us to control certain players that are getting gobby etc etc.

Is this a new thing this year with the communication between the ref and captain??

It works well in my opinion and i know that if i'd not been asked to calm a player down then we'd certainly have a few more players booked by now.

I haven't done my coaching badges and there are a couple of reasons as to why, not to say that I will never do them.

I have got my referee's badge though, but, is that a good thing? From my point of view yes as most of the time I am wise enough to understand why the referee has made that decision (yes I often have to tell SL why!), but at the same time the worst type of player to referee is one who is a referee themselves cos they think they know it all and then are more cheeky when 'telling' the referee when he gets a decision wrong.

A few years back, there was a 'friendly' match between Reading Refs and Bracknell Ref's and I think 3 players were sent off, and given county bans!

But I find that when you explain a decision to a "Ref" who is playing they tend to listen a bit more smile

I was at a Refs 5-a-side one year and there were 2 sent off in the final !! Big bans for that smile

I would also like to take this opportunity to state that I ran the line twice last year, once when the ref didnt turn up, and once when the assistant got injured.

In the game that the ref didnt turn up, I got higher marks than the appointed assistant excited hunk

Absolutely. Trouble is you only remember the bad decisions!

A very good post, Kroons, and I'm glad to say that all posts so far are constructive.

EVERYBODY makes mistakes, including referees, believe it or not.

A referee only sees an incident from one angle - True, he can consult with his assistants but this rarely happens.

Players that usually complain have seen the incident probably from a completely different angle on the pitch. It's HOW the player reacts that is more important.

OK - I may swear now and then in a bantering way - NOT at the ground, but I do wish referees and their assistants would clamp down much harder on foul language on the pitch.

It isn't big - It isn't necessary - It prompts youngsters to react in the same way in youth games. If referees really clamped down on the 'You must be jokin' lino, you feckin' kent !!', it wouldn't take long for players to realise that this sort of behaviour is going to get them NOWHERE !

I am of the opinion that many assistant referees are scared of getting involved and make it difficult for the referee. This does not apply to all assistants, but I am sure that many of you agree. I cannot believe that allreferee's give their instructions to thier assistants and just say 'give me offside and ball in and out of play'

why do refs constantly make hand signals to linos, telling them what way to flag. this is insulting to them. what makes it worse is, when asked if he saw who it came off, he then says the ref gave it, he must have seen something.why put yourself in that position. and before we get onto, HAS YOUR PLAYER NEVER MADE A MISTAKE. what you can be sure of, there are 3 people being paid to do a job not one.they maybe the only 3 people on the pitch

that are paid. so maybe they are expected to get it right more than not.

You are quite right Roland and that is exactly what they do.

As to the signals. That is called communication and helps the officials get it right more often than not. the problem is the people who slaughter somone for 2 incorrect throw in calls and dont praise them for the 50 they get right.
