List of Slough managers

From the late 1950's it's something like Jimmy Price, Len Townsend, Bob Gibbs (initially with help from Les Wickson and Edgar Woodford), Jack Goodwin, Bob Gibbs(again) Tommy Lawrence, Roy Sleap, Joe Arpino, Laurie Churchill, Terry Reardon, Howard Kennedy, Alan Davies, David Kemp, Les Briley, David Russell, Brian McDermott, Paul Hardyman, Graham Roberts, Steve Browne and the rest you already know. Apologies if I have omitted any others.I will leave any discussion of their respective merits to others but I can say that at the turn of the 1960's the club owed a great deal to Bob Gibbs for restoring respectability after a, fortunately short-lived, period of very poor performances, through the skilful coaching of talented young and mostly local players. Probably the the most achieving manager was Tommy Lawrence, though the difference between him and Bob Gibbs was that Lawrence had a vast knowledge of football talent across the Home Counties and South East. Also a great spotter of talent that later went on to play pro football.

Gibbs on the other hand was a local school teacher who had knowledge of local talent ( no doubt some of those could have turned pro like Reardon-Delaney-Hartridge )

In later times Laurie Churchill had success ( he was a disciple of Tommy Lawrence )and David Kemp ( who I think is assisting now at Stoke ). When Reardon was manager the club had a good side, then due to Taxes ran out of money, so he had to recruit local park players in the main, so any success he had was a tribute to his managementship or the regard players had for his outstanding talent.

Sadly times now are so different and must not be compared with the above managers or players.

People say you shouldn't live in the past but when your use to cream, mediocrity comes a poor second.

That last sentance is hilarious. Brent-esque.

Whenever you post these days Wiz it now brings to mind what Javier Clemente told the press when they asserted that they watch a lot of football. "The cows at Lezama watch football every day and they haven't got a [****!!****] clue."

Why reply when you have nothing constructive to utter-just shows yourself up for the moron you must be.If you believe the football slough play now and the manager in charge is anywhere near what was listed above-then its you who have it wrong-as always suspected you and your cronies are those wanting and needing the knowledge football wise.

you ilk probably think man u's ronaldo-is comparable to pele or george best etc.

I think he was actually trying to be serious and didnt think how funny it would sound and it would be funny if it wasnt so tragic.

ah roger what a silly question, but as its you i have searched my fading memory.firstly though just like to say that when the conference was called the alliance league, they were always inviting slough, enfield and wycombe to join-but as far as i know the committe at the time kept turning them down.
anyway managers-first was laurie churchill-we won the ishmian league on the final game at sutton-but decided not to take up the option to join conference/alliance league.
then alan davis and also dave russell by default-enfield had money problems.
ps. should you want any other questions about the great times in the past-ask away. after all no point in asking staines rebel-martin ? or nathan? or roger for that matter-as they say you have to had lived the dreams- not the nightmares.

THERE WAS NO AUTOMATIC PROMOTION FROM THE ISHTMIAN LEAGUE OR THE ATHENIAN LEAGUE infact there was no alliance or conference leagues before 1979.

different times , different men, different teams, different game, most of which probably would not do very well if in each others time , so all this bull is self depricating, all have their merits , all have their time so lets keep it that way, and enjoy the memories, and look forward to all the good times.

Based solely on footballing ability, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Lionel Messi in many peoples opinion are on a par with the likes of Best, Pele, Di Stefano etc..

The thing is nobody will ever be able to prove it one way or the other...it's all about opinions.

No matter how egotistical you are about your own ability to know what a decent footballer is, there will always be plenty of others whose opinions differ.

Just accept it & move on.

Erm back on topic, John Docherty? Got us to the top of the Conference then buggered off after his compensation payout turned up from his previous employ.

Relegated at the end of the season after Les Briley took over!
