We all have our mentors and obviously golf was your route to yours. Mine was my grandfather, so I quite lucky there.

 

I didnt really perceive golf as a middle-class sport. Loads of my mates play, and they're all riff-raff. No doubt there are a few clubs run by the old blazer-boys, but so are sports like Tennis and even Footie.

 

Not to impressed with the golf-courses mullering the beautiful coastline along the Costa del Sol though. Oh well.

It's a pity the Yanks don't really treat the sport as a sport. I refer to the Ryder Cup Fiasco a few years ago, where barracking seemed to be the order of the day !!

well thats an interesting one 'VIS-2 because I have an insight into that........

 

the costa del sol was virtually a desert 70 years ago...........outside of the 4 or 5 established towns......not a palm tree to note in sight and for the most part uninhabited apart for a few nomadic andulusian 'gitanes'...(we won't get into that one 'cos most of their descendents are still there breaking into ex pat villas)....anyway I digress......

 

during the course of a development that I was involved with in the early eighties I stumbled across a book which related to one of the big sherry hoses of Spain and it centred on the family...its dynasty's and their falls from grace at the turn of the century.....

 

now then....if I recall.... the lands of southern andulucia..... now known as the cost del sol.... went to the youngest daughter.......a realitively worthless asset at that time....(apparently she'd done something to p*** the old man off)...anyway....little was done with these lands until the tourist booms came along in the early sixties when the major redevelopments began down there......the rest as they say is history.......

 

its an interesting story actually and according to one of my spanish mates her descendents (all now fabulously wealthy beyond imagination) are still fighting over who own's what..........the golf developments have of course brought the beauty to southern andulucia along with the demand for real estate........

I think that those things are only found in people and sadly people involved in all sports......unfortunately that includes football which we all share a passion for......

 

I accept that golf can have its attractions for the socially inept 'climbers' of this world and there are still golf clubs steeped in the mysterious wonders and ancient traditions of freemasonry....

 

all true golfers keep well away from both......

Oh, I'm a capitalist, Offi. Dont get me wrong. Just that I vere a little to the left. and the invisible, of course.

 

I'm not really a golfer, but I go down that end of Europe quite a bit. Mainly to the new horse racing course and surrounding villages (my friend is a trainer and owner of horses, I'm not a gambling addict!!) and the scenery is always pleasant, except for the bloody golf courses.

 

But I fully appreciate the wealth that tourism brings to certain countries. It's just a shame that mass tourism seems to kill off indigenous culture and history. Still, they're all capitalists too.

 

If you're there again, pop down to a village called La Cala de Mijas. There's a lovely restaurant on the beach and in July (I forget the date) they have this ceremony where they take the Virgin Mary out to sea, to protect the fisherman and bless the village for a year. All very rustic and Spanish. Much nicer than a load of blokes in silly trousers twatting little balls about!!

 

And, as Papa has pointed out - Pitch'n'Putt is the sport of kings!

La Cala is a recently built area to accomodate La Cala golf course which is the David L golfing acadamy and one of my all time best courses

No, no. La Cala resort is. The fishing village has been there since moorish times.

Their is a whole new village of La Cala built to accomodate the golfing visitors

That is not to say you are wrong just that the very much larger developed area is new

Hello pabird, nice to know I was missed.

 

How golfers perform in their chosen heaven............ on arrival at hotel they dump their cases and clubs in reception and head for the bar. Some hours and a whole lot of alcohol later wouldn't rate their handicap!!!

 

I was at Vilamoura, next to the Old Course, ever been there?

I have seen the golfing village. It is just up the road from the original village. They're building a massive 5* hotel there too. The new racecourse is supposed to bring in loads more people when it's finished. And there are plans to build a marina to rival Puerto Banus. Such a shame to lose the cosy intimacy of the village. But as you pointed out, the locals will all make obscene amounts of money from the visiting Arabs, Americans and gambling addicted Europeans!!

Ok official I'll take your word for it. All I know is that during my time in said resort every party of golfers (and there were quite a few) seemed to spend more time in the bar or by the pool than on the course. Just my observation!

Good job I'm neither blonde or bimbo as they wanted to explain the finer points of the game in the hotel gardens in the dark. I mean, everyone knows you need a yellow or orange ball not white when the light's bad and whoever heard of using a sand wedge on grass?!!!!!!!!

My massive need for TLC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The amount of times I had to say "just what part of NO don't you understand". There was no language difficulty as one group came from a Golf Club in Saddleworth and the other from Halifax!!!!!!!! Just my luck.
