CCL League Cup - Worcester Park 4 Dorking 0.

Not particularly pretty reading !

Dorking fell to an unexpectedly heavy defeat on Saturday in the CCL League Cup at fellow CCL division 1 side Worcester Park, a combination of player absences and injuries partly explaining the defeat, but not excusing the level of performance given the way Chicks have started the season.

Dorking had achieved the right to play Worcester Park with an impressive 2-1 win at CCL Premier Division side Epsom & Ewell in the previous round, at that time Epsom being unbeaten in all competitions, so manager Tony Webb will be disappointed that his side could overcome that hurdle, yet fall at the seemingly lesser hurdle presented by Park. But on a hot afternoon, it was the home side who fully deserved to progress as Chicks failed to live up to their form of only 2 defeats in 9 games, that being to higher league Chatham Town and Selsey.

Webb will point to the absence of leading scorer Dan Bennett and everpresent defender Aaron Leacock, while captain Roy Newman bravely played despite an operation on his jaw just a week ago. In fact Newman was not alone in playing despite an injury, as Alex Hill was carrying a knock and James White and Victor Donker were only able to make the subs bench due to niggling injuries.

The absences meant a second game in succession for the experienced Warren Burton at centre back alongside Newman, while Jon Tyler continued at full back. Jesse Davis again continued in centre midfield, with striker Simon Cassidy playing left midfield in place of Donker. In goal, Dan Coote's suspension meant another game for keeper Michael Nicholas on loan from Chipstead.

Dorking started this game well enough, but the first goal was scored by Worcester Park, against the run of play as Park kicked down a noticeable slope on the home side's pitch.

The hope was that Chicks would pull their socks up in the second half and use the slope to their advantage, especially given the unusually hot afternoon, but the home side were clearly used to making the most of the sloping terrain, and once Park had made it 2-0, Dorking looked out of the game.

Disappointingly, Dorking wilted, and showed little sign that they would get back into the game, despite second half substitutions that saw amongst other GAry Fennessey join the fray. Two late goals rubbed salt into the Dorking wounds, but in truth the goals reflected accurately the balance of play in the second half as Park finished by far the stronger, Chicks ending the match poorly.

Dorking have an instant chance to bounce back, as on Tuesday Chicks face CCL Premier Division side Bedfont in the Southern Combination Floodlit cup, kick off 7-45. Then on Saturday Dorking travel to Farnham to play Farnham Town in a league game, next home game after that being on Tuesday 7th October when Hanworth Villa are the visitors to Meadowbank in the CCL Division 1 league cup.

No problems Mick t, though I'm usually pretty busy until half way through the first half. Make yourself known.

Lets hope the 'Asahi' pipes have been cleaned since last week, then.

TSF:- Do you want me to text you updates ? BJR.

My phone is pretty ancient. I only use it for calls and texts, but I'll try and oblige on the team.
