Ashford town 0 - Margate 1

This was a game well worth travelling to see

those of us there were thrilled to see ninety minutes of a Margate team giving its all . We almost opened the scoring early on in the game when a great chance fell to Michael Power whos header just went over the bar , this seemed to be Michaels game after crashing a great shot against the Ashford cross bar , he eventually scored the winning goal with a tremendous shot from just inside the penalty box about ten minuets into the second half . Good chances also fell to Kenny Pratt whom again gave his all for the whole game . Defensively we played very well with Ryan Peters reverting to the right back position , Peter Butcher on loan from Tottenham looked extremely comfortable in goal and claimed everything he came out for , also featuring well was the addition to the left back position Danny Kerrigan from Heybridge . On the whole it was a good team performance that won this game and made Ashford Town look average , Barry Ashby must have been delighted with this, lets hope the team can produce the same fighting spirit along with good finishing on Tuesday evening against Tonbridge , well done lads.

And here is a comment from the Ashford forum re the incident at the end:

No idea what happened as they were going off because I was still walking round from the stand. Before long something serious is going to happen. Concentrate on getting the players going guys not the oppo supporters, no matter what the provocation !

That is exactly what happened last season too, it wasnt a players dad then though. Both the managers are very aggressive and obviously don't like anything being said back to them either.

I think, Alan, it depends what is said. I also think there is a distinction between "aggression" and "passion", partilarly in a footballing context.

While I am not condoning what happened, I think all of Ashford's management team are passionate about the game, and their club. I know that at the end of a home defeat, most football fans feel frustrated and angry, so how are players, officials and managers going to feel? I suspect that Mark Butler was provoked at a time when he was feeling extremely frustrated and has reacted to that. That's human nature, although I know that once you step onto the pitch you're supposed to "rise above it".

It is alleged on the Ashford Forum that a punch was thrown at Mr Butler - if true, that would be far more significant than any "verbals".
