Millwall season 82-83

Re: the Millwall game,

I was only a kid at the time, so I can't remember whether the MotD cameras were there?. I do, however, remember the "charge of the heavy brigade" made by the Millwall supporters at half-time.

We'd not seen the signs, which were placed too high up on a lamp-post!? and didn't realise there was crowd segregation in place. We found ourselves in the wrong end, for the 1st half of the game, with the Millwall fans.

After the half spent keeping quiet and having our eardrums perforated by all the bile & taunts from both ends of the pitch, the town end of the ground suddenly emptied (as did the other end, with those people exiting the ground over the training pitch). This gave me & my friend the opportunity to find somewhere, comparatively, safer to stand!.

Anyway the link above makes some very interesting reading. There is a fair bit written about the Slough - Millwall FA cup game, mostly regarding the resulting the fall-out and some very interesting quotes attributed to Alan Thorne.

If the quotes contained are reported accurately, it really would make you wonder as to the reasons why he would ever have wanted to get involved with Slough?.

One point though, perhaps one of your older readers to clarify, was Sloughs goal a late penalty?. I'd always thought it was an Attrell diving header, but perhaps I'm mixing this up with something else?. The win, at the time, was a great one....but it appears other events surrounding the game come more clearly to mind.

Correct on Gary Attrell - an electric moment.

Basically the Millwall fans came lumbering down the Wdexham Road chanting "Where are you Chelsea?" looking for a fight. Trouble before the match, mayhem during half time and then, what with the result, it all kicked off in the car park and on the route back to train station afterwards.

All, sadly overshadowing a great achievement.
