U18 away to Ringmer F.A youth cup

Margate came from 2-0 down at half time to comfortably beat Ringmer in the F.A youth cup.

The journey to Ringmer was a story in itself including not having enough cars to take the boys up to the match. In the end managed to get the whole squad up to the game but it is just my little moan to the club to sort something out for long journeys such as these.

Anyway enough moaning, lets talk about the Football.

Margate fielded their best possible side with players from both the reserves and the firsts playing. Rinmer themselves had three players from their senior side, a giant who we all assumed at the beggining of the game was the trainer, upfront, and two defenders.

Margate started slowly with Ringmer taking the lead in the first two minutes after a kick from the goalie fell to the Ringmer forward and he passed the ball into the empty net. Minutes later another mix up at the back led to the Giant upfront put the ball away from 5 yards. Not sure wether it was the long journey but it looked like margate were going to go out of the cup without a fight. The rest of the half produced good football from margate but with no end product as it looked more and more likely that we would be leaving Rinmer without even a goal.

After a change in formation and a team talk that involved a lot of #@## and **** the boys came out ready to take the fight to the bigger ringmer side.

The talk worked as within the first minute of the second half right back Ollie gray headed the ball down the line for Dan Gonzalez to run onto goal and lob the goalie from 20 yards. If this wasnt a good enough start to the second half already Gonzalez chased a lost cause just a minute later to play it back for Sam Cliff to score from inside the six yard box. The play became more even for the next 10 minutes with both teams trying to get a grip on the game until Joe Taylor released Sam Cliff down the wing who crossed for Sam Crompton to score from 12 yards. The 1 goal lead never felt comfortable for me but the boys continued to run the Ringmer defence ragged with the pace of Sam Cliff and Dan Gonzalez causing all sorts of trouble as it did last week. Finally came the fourth goal and the breathing space that the team needed and deserved with Dan Gonzalez being sent down the wing by Sam crompton and put a defence splitting pass through to Sam Cliff who had his first shot saved by the goalie but then followed up to tap in. Josh Bryant was then brought on for the tiring legs of Nathan Scott and added the fith goal with a good finish from 12 yards. Ringmer scored a consolation with a minute to go, but Margate won the game by a deseved 5 goals to 3.

For me its a shame that no one from the club senior management was there to see what was once again an immpressive display from the team. The partnership of Sam Cliff and Dan Gonzalez looks to be one that will test any defence and it would be nice to see it some time soon at Reserve level at the very least.

Special mention goes out to Nathan Scott and Joe Hickman who ran there socks off for the team today not allowing the Ringmer team near our defenders. When Ringmer did get through they were faced with the back 4 of Ollie Gray, Luke Wheatley, Chris Jordan and Stevie Gibbs who were all rocks and fought to the end.

Goal keeper Aleks Krunic also deserves a mention as he put the mistake of the first half behind him to produse two outstanding saves at key moments in the second half.

Sorry the report was so long but just felt that every player in the team today deserved a shout as it was such an immpressive second half display.

Fantastic-something to cheer about after a pretty miserable weekend for the club.

Think you are at home to Hastings next round.

Maybe we will get to play a league side in an FA competition afterall this season.

Is hickman related to Tom ?

Thanks for the report.

well done margate

Super stuff. Wish I had been there. Reads as a very exciting game, to have watched, and been a spectator at. Just how I like my football.

Keep it going, and seeing, your next round is at home to Hastings (MMs not usually wrong on these matters), I promise to turn up and support. So long as someone posts the date and k.o.time on here, please!

Again well done and looking forward to watching you all play in the near future.
