New Stadium

Eloquently put, Ian. The one thing that glues the younger supporters such as yourself, and old buffers such as I is our affinity, or love of the old ground.

We have, however, proved that we can adapt to change, such as the name change and the revolution that was/is MYFC.

Whether a new stadium is a success is dependant on a number of factors, some of which are so variable as to make it guesswork.

It is a huge gamble, the biggest in the club's history. Success will see the club go from strength to strength.

Failure will see a the club doomed to playing at a low echelon of football in the best stadium outside of the football league, will a massive debt.

Interestingly, Oxford are making a loss on gates of 4,500, whilst renting the Kassam stadium.

It seems few clubs are exempt from the credit slump.

If you increased the fan base on a regular bases, the stadium would have to be moved I would of thought. Getting out of the ground is bad enough now if we have a reasonable gate. let alone if the fan base increased by a fair amount. The point that a new stadium could attract larger crowds is feasible to me, may even draw some of the old fans out of the woodwork. We also need to take care of away fans to, If away supporters are drawn to the stadium because they enjoy there day. This will encourage even more income for the club. At the moment the ground is in need of decent catering facilities, decent toilets and a roof especially at the away end. A family section would not be a bad idea either. To much expense for Stonebridge Road. We badly need a new stadium, in saying that I do not want the expense of running a new stadium to force us to make cuts elsewhere IE on the pitch.

The very latest news on the club website is this

"Development team issue latest stadium update

Wednesday, 17 September 2008

The club has been working on a new stadium project for some time and as part of the recent takeover a services agreement was set up between the football club and Fleet Group Development ("FGD") in relation to this project. FGD was set up prior to the MyFC takeover as a subsidiary of the club to run and deliver the new stadium project.

FGD is providing consultancy services in the sourcing, planning, design and construction of the stadium. It is keeping the club updated on the status of the project and liaising with them on all the football-related aspects. To this end, a second presentation was made to EUFC and the MyFC Society Board on Wednesday 20 August.

The end objective under the agreement is that the club is granted a right to use the New Stadium on terms it deems acceptable. In the meantime, FGD needs to meet Key Performance Indicators to demonstrate the project is heading in the direction the club wishes and these are amended and updated annually.

As previously reported, we have been in detailed talks with a development partner we believe can enable us to meet our objectives. They have been carrying out due diligence

on a site we have identified and working through a financial analysis of the project. At the time of the last update our architects, DG3A, had drawn up an outline design. This has since been followed up with more detailed design drawings. The subsequent initial financial analysis has come up with a figure that is too high, mainly because worst-case estimates for remediation work have been used.

To get a more accurate financial analysis we need to carry out bore hole testing on the site for which permission of the landowner is required. We have been unable to get this so far and are still working on it in conjunction with the developer and SEEDA. This and the fact that the residential property market has hit a major slump means this project is not as positive as we would wish. The overall development needed to help finance the new stadium included a large element of residential development.

We are still very focused on the site we have identified and keen to work with the proposed development partner. On the other hand, whilst we try to sort out the issues regarding remediation costs, we have been looking at contingencies in case it does not go ahead. A series of meetings have been held with Gravesham Borough Council planning officials and members together with Kent County Council, local landowners and property agents to see what other sites might be suitable and sustainable. We have shortlisted three sites and are currently doing feasibility work on them.

The next meeting is to be scheduled for October."

Doesn't really say a lot, and neither does it give me hope for any good news in the forseeable future.

But if it's absolutely necessary for a new ground to have a sponsor attached to its name (in an ideal world, hopefully not), it's vital that the ground has a more traditional, non-commercialized name (e.g. based on location) too, so that the fans can use that one and ignore the corporate one (for example, Southampton's new ground was named The Friends Provident Stadium, but everyone just called it St Mary's; a preferable scenario to, say, Burton, whose new ground is just called the Pirelli and has no alternative name).

Indeed, although even like Burton if we got the Eurostar Ivory Tower Arena, I'd imagine fans would quickly popularise another name based on location if desired. The Rosherville Rosebowl or something.

Well they are just going to have to build it in Jimmy Jackson avenue then aren't they.

When my local team (Huddersfield) changed stadium a while back it took the name of the builder for some years (McAlpine) - presumably part of a cut price construction deal. 'Galpharm' just doesn't have the same ring to it... Anyway the new stadium was way better than the old one (even won an award if I remember correctly), but there was a big outcry at the thought of losing the home of so many memories. It's human nature to be sentimental, and to resist change.
