Great Wakering Rovers 3 Hornchurch 3

Urchins

Recommended Posts

So after a long hard season we came to the final game - and for once something to play for on the last day. A win today and a Northwood defeat at Hemel Hempstead and the Div 1 North Championship would be ours.

Despite facing a mid-table finish, Wakering were definitely up for this game and were going to make it very hard for us.

The first half saw five goals. Wakering took the lead after 7 minutes through Dan Trenkell with low drive into the far corner from 18 yards. We equalised in the 21st minute when a Garry Kimble free kick was allowed to travel low into the penalty area to Andrew Martin who from a couple of yards out touched the ball home. 8 minutes later though, Wakering took the lead again through Danny Scopes who volleyed in a far post free kick. Almost straight from the kick-off an Urchins attack led to a goalmouth scramble with Steve Carter nodding in from 6 yards. Just before half time we took the lead, this time Nick Lowery volleying home a loose ball in the area from 15 yards.

The second half was disappointing as we never really got out of the blocks. Wakering equalised two minutes after the restart and it was ex-Urchin Keith Wilson who scored it, drilling home past the advancing Michael Collier from the corner of the penalty area. Wakering defended resolutely and continued to frustrate us. Chris Moore headed just wide from a free kick with 15 minutes left and in the dying minutes a Jamie Southon header from a corner went an inch or two wide.

As it happened, Hemel carried out their part of the bargain (thanks guys) but we couldn't quite do our bit today.

No complaints, a superb away support, 3 goals away from home and in all a terrific season.

Line-up:- Collier, Carter, Kimble, Marsden, Jopson (Cripps 81), Moore, McGowan, Southon, Martin (Jones 74), John, Lowery (Cowley 61). Subs not used:- Fox, Wood (GK)

Yeh dead right Rob, and a well done for all the video clipsd, I know all the fans like 'em.

A bit unlucky when the last header went past the post, but that's football, promotion was the aim after achieving top six and we did it well done to everyone and of course to the physios who maintained the fitness.

Great stuff John, Martin, Del.

Highlight for me yesterday was seeing all the youngsters decked out in red and white.

By the way, today is Star Wars Day !!

I know that it has all been and gone now, but I couldn't and still can't understand why Jonah got such a brief run out yesterday and actually only came on to replace another forward? Was Taffy injured? I'd have thought that surely one of the central defenders would have been sacrificed, rather than a forward? We eventually sacrificed a central defender with only 9 minutes and replaced him with what? Yes, a forward!!? Confused the hell out of me, but then I am only a humble supporter!

It wasn't to be at the end of day, to be honest I never would have expected Northwood to slip up, they did the running for the most of the season, but I bet they had more than a few nervy moments waiting for our score to come through. Anyway, well done to Northwood and congratulations on winning the league. As for us, we achieved what we set out to do, getting promoted, so goodbye Gt. [****!!****]ering, Aveley, Tilbury, Wealdstone, etc, etc, may our paths never cross again!! Last Saturday (Berkhamsted game) will rate as one of my favorite football days for a good many years and no one can take that away from us. It has been a brilliant season and I can't wait to get back to it next season. Like you say, what on earth will we all do this summer!!

Anyway, thanks to one and all at the club for making it happen, Mick and his boys, all the players, Carl, the committee and the supporters.

See you all tomorrow!!

Hulls a poisonous little p**** and he was kicking balls all over the place wasting time....one of our trainers pushed him away to get the ball back into play and the little tossa threw himself on the floor holding his eye like tyson had hit him.....

he's a disgrace to non league football.....hope he keeps his job there because I doubt that he'll get another one....
