Great result but I don't understand the tactics

I walked away from the game on a real high, the fact that we took all 3 points. Great and well done to all lads.

Yet, during the game, I was worried about the lack of width we seem to be adopting, both in attack and defence.

I could be totally wrong for thinking this way and was hoping that someone, could shed some light, as to this being a positive way to play the game. I know we got the 3 points today and long may it continue!

Yet, whilst I'm watching our games, should I be concerned or is this a good tactic, that I should really be admiring?

Mind you if we keep walking away with 3 points every game I guess I'll grow to like it........maybe!

Again well done, to all, on both the result and intensive workrate on show.

Not there yesterday, but i like the idea and tactics that BA seems to employ where he has 4 battling 'proper' midfield players, fighting for possession and closing down.

Width is great when it comes off, but to be effective, you need a wide player who can :

beat a man at least 1 out of 2 times,

then cross a really good ball 8 times out of 10.

ON the rare occasions at this level that a wide man beats a player, they either put over a completely useless cross, fall over,or run out of steam by the corner flag

then you need a striker who can convert 1 out of 2 chances.

Frankly-we have not got those players (and at this level-neither do any clubs),so for me,BA is rightly playing to our strengths and playing the percentage game.

Most games are won/lost in central midfield, and most ballls are played through central midfiled, so thats where you have most players.

Wide men, only get involved in the game for 50% the game maximum, so play the percentage game ;and for me- absolutely the right tactics from BA.

As an aside-has the HDP pitch been slightly narrowd this season for exactly that reason ?

I was worried about the lack of width. The oppo seemed able and willing to spread the ball about, and we were caught out a couple of times by a diagonal ball from back to front (The free kick leading to their goal being an example). I thought Quain had a good game taking one on one down the wing when he had the chance. I prefer this to hoofing the ball over to Ryan who, although can leap like a salmon, is a diminutive figure!

And MM, I'm glad you mention that about the width, as it has been niggling me that the linesmen seem further away this year. Maybe the width has been reduced in order to try and keep the inept linesman out of throttling distance!

MM - I think you are correct about pitch being narrowed, I mentioned to my son on Saturday that I thought the touchline appeared a yard or so further in down the stand side.

Incidentally, one of the best (and most dangerous) crosses that Aaron Quain put in this week, albeit from the right after he'd come across to take the corner.
