Fan Profiles

As another space-filler for the programme I thought it would be a good idea to do some supporter profiles.

I will do one here to give you an idea and if you want to do one yourself either pm me or email me at steve.ball@margate-fc.com, prefereably with a picture.

NAME: Steve Ball

D.O.B: 13/06/1972

PLACE OF BIRTH: Margate

CURRENT HOME: Ramsgate

FIRST MARGATE GAME: 27/10/1984 Thanet United 4 Chatham Town 2 - Can't remember a great deal about the game but can recall Lennie Lee scoring with a scissor kick.

My first away game came that December when we drew 1-1 at Addlestone and Weybridge when Vic Medus had a perfectly good winner disallowed.

WHY MARGATE?: As a kid living in Ramsgate I spent every Saturday watching the games at Jackey Bakers. After trying Ramsgate and just not enjoying it at Southwood I gave Thanet United a try and the simple fact that there was singing at the games (albeit generally by half a dozen people, I was hooked.

TOP 5 PLAYERS:

Karl Lloyd - When I first started watching he was suspended for hitting a ref in a Sunday League game but once I saw his hard striking style (and his superb 'tache) he instantly became a legend in my eyes.

Iain O'Connell - Just a complete hero. When Jeff Trice joking said that the old Hartsdown was knocked down to prevent Iain 'running through it for the cause' he was not far wrong.

Paul Sykes - This could have easily been Martin Buglione instead but the fact that Syko had so much personality gives him the edge.

Jay Saunders - I do not think that there was ever a game where he did not give 100%, often playing through injuries and still being the best player on the park.

Leon Braithwaite - It was so hard to narrow it down to five players but Leon's pace and the way he scared defenders back at the start means he gets the final nod.

TOP 5 GAMES:

BURTON ALBION 2 MARGATE 0 - DR MARTENS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION 05/05/2001

Already secure of promotion the the Conference thanks to Burton failing to win on the Tuesday night, after a season of pressure we had the chance to watch a game and enjoy ourselves without worrying about the score. A superb atmosphere.

MARGATE 2 DOVER 1 - KENT SENIOR CUP FINAL 02/02/1994

A game against high-flying Dover, then managed by Chris Kinnear and including Iain O'Connell, at Gillingham was going to be a good day out anyway. The fact that Billy Plews got the first and when sub Joe Brayne got the late winner (even now I love watching that goal go in at the Dover fans leaving the Rainham End very, very quickly) made it all the better.

STAINES TOWN 0 MARGATE 3 - F A CUP 4TH QUALIFYING ROUND 24/10/1997

An away game on a Friday night as we attempted to reach the proper rounds of the FA Cup for the first time in over 20 years. The game was played at Chertsey Town FC and most of us thought that even though we were the favourites we were bound to lose. Howeverm Andy Blondrage, Bugsy and Syko sent us through to face......

MARGATE 1 FULHAM 2 - F A CUP 1ST ROUND 16/11/1997

The scoreline is irrelevant. This was the proper stages of the F A Cup. Against a league side. Managed by Kevin Keegan and Ray Wilkins. Owned by Mohammed Al Fayed. And live on Sky!

When Mark Munday tucked away a penalty won by Martin Buglione tripping over his own feet outside the box the dream was on but in the end Fulham turned it around despite a spirited battle.

CHESTER CITY 0 MARGATE 3 - CONFERENCE 06/10/2001

In all fairness Chester were at their lowest ebb at the time but the fact that they never even opened the away end because they did not expect us to bring any fans and we destroyed a side that had spent nearly 70 years in the Football League made this sweet. Braithwaite, Phil Collins and Saunders did the damage that saw the travelling support clearly he one lone voice in amongst the home fans shout 'The last desperate act of a condemned man' as City manager Gordon Hill made a double substitution.

We also got into the bar just in time to see David Beckham's famous free-kick against Greece.

No-one??????????

I thought this would be something that a few people would be interested in doing but as of yet, no-one has responded.

If anyone did want to respond, perhaps you could also add your favourite and least favourite grounds visited with Margate. For example........

FAVOURITE GROUND: Wessex Stadium, Weymouth. A 'proper' stadium, huge and fully enclosed. The view from wherever you are is superb.

LEAST FAVOURITE GROUND: Dunstable Town (mid 1980's). In the middle of nowhere, an almost condemned stand and nothing to stand on but grass all the way round.

Thought I might try to get this going again as I am really really struggling to fill space in the programmes.

Obviously see the first post for more details!
