How good is this Fleet team ?

Chatting to a mate at work, we were comparing the current team with the team of '79/80, which finished 5th in The Alliance League. Although of the same pyramid level, I argued the standard is better today, as half of the league are full time, and it it more competitive, as there is the lure of automatic (or play-off) promotion the the football league.

My choice is that today's team are fitter, quicker, stronger but the team of '80 had a superior defence. Given one more year with Wilkerson, Duku, Pennock, Lee, Skinner and Burton, I may have to change my mind.

Apart from that I think that if we survive again next term, we are currently watching the best Fleet team in living memory.

Who, if any from the present team, would be able to make a career in thr football league ?

I reckon Wilkerson , Duku, Bentley are all up to division 1 or 2 standard.

I acknowledge that Pennock is something of a football genius, but I get the impression that his knee wouldn't last another month, let alone another year - having said that, with Barnett and Sturgess to come back fully fit our defence is in very good hands - are they better than the 79/80 side - I couldn't possibly comment given my age, but wouldn't be like asking who would of won between Joe Louis and Ali ?

Getting back to the original question, I tend to agree about our Alliance Premier defence. Jacks and Idle were superb players who could get into an alltime Fleet team. Lee Smelt was also an excellent 'keeper.

As every game would be an away game for me.......and British Airways are scrapping Concord(British spelling....not French) i haven't seen the Fleet play for 3 years now, so i can't comment on all the present players. on the subject of goalies.......

Lee Smelt was a very good Goalie........but come on........what about Coe, who, if my grey matter is not failing me saved a penalty on his Debut.......then went to Arsenal and was never heard of again.
