A question for RWG

Out of curiosity, what is your best 11 of all time?

Dare i question you, as you know that Reardon (which you base your superior knowledge to rant on) was one of the best players to grace the shirt (as my grandad told me), therefore you seem to feel you are better qualified at evaluating games and/or players than the average supporter.

The scouting missions must be flying in at the moment, along with managerial job offers, coaching roles and motivational talks!!! Or was you asked to look at players in North Leigh, bearing in mind that there was hundereds of games on Tuesday?

RWG I reckon I must be about same age as you so hopefully you will recognise some of the older players. I know you are entitled to your opinion but to say that Steve Daly doesn't care about Slough Town really annoyed me. He has stayed loyal to our Club when all those around him have (sadly) left and if he really didn't care about Slough he would have gone when everything went pear shaped! He has been a Great player for Slough and a fine captain and we need at least some experience with such a young side. Yes he is past his best, but he is now a legend in Slough history just like Reardon, Delaney, White, Thompson etc etc. I wouldn't say Terry was very quick at the end of his career either!! I am as frustrated at our position as you are and look back to the Dolphin and Wexham Park days with much happiness. We are where we are and it could be worse. We are still in existence when teams like Edgeware and Southall and even scarborough ( I believe ) have totally disappeared.

Lets see what happens Saturday. I will be there with my Dad who is now 80 and has supported Slough since 1955. It has been very hard for both of us to see the demise of our beloved club, but we will both continue to support our team until the very end.

By the way RWG what level of football did you reach?

Rebel you wrote " Out of curiosity, what is your best 11 of all time?"- yet you did not give us the benifit of yours. All choices of peoples best players is subjective of course. But I will give you mine, bearing in mind that most of you won't know who they are

Richard Teale. ( Q.P.R. England Non league )

Ian Reid ( England Non League )

John Delaney ( Bournmouth England Non League )

Phil Beal ( Spurs Full England )

Ray Eaton ( England Non League )

Steve Thompson ( Wycombe-Yeovil as a professional )

Terry Reardon ( England Non League )

Roger Day ( England Non League )

David Kemp ( Brentford-Wimbledon )

John Richardson ( Arsenal )

Rowan Dodds

I'd play them as 4 3 3 we only had the incomparable John Richardson for one season, he hit 40+ goals then Arsenal came knocking.

As centre backs Delaney- Beal- Keith Mead- Young( Brighton-Wimbledon-Wolves-Wales )Bobby Hatt- Mickey Droy ( Chelsea ) were all far far better than Daly.

Hi, I can confirm that Paul McKinnon is living in the Camberley area he was a coach of Sandhurst Town up until quite recently, I still bump into his father Jock on occasions whom I'am sure you rebel supporters will remember.

Hi, The Krooners are looking ok, Darren Barnard is still director of football and I have to say getting us on a more professional basis, however Chertsey town look the main contenders this season as an awful lot of money is being invested on the playing side by the guy who was going to save Aldershot way back when, Spencer Trethewy.

I just wondered how many would remember this line up as a best ever Slough eleven by the way you would probably need to be over 60 to remember this lot but hey ho they still were the best in their time.

Well I am not surprised just a little disappointed-firstly " Rebel without a cause " has not posted his best eleven-NOR HAVE THE MAJORITY OF MOUTHY ONES who are only to ready to play down or mock forthright opinions. The reason I guess is that they could not come up with a Slough eleven to match mine, cos you will have noticed that most of them were non league internationals or played for pro clubs in the football league-many many light years advanced of those playing in recent years-you come on here and say Daly was/is a great player-YOU HAVE NO IDEA what a great player is in this type of football if you believe that-good club man most of the time yes I give you that, great player compared with some in the past NO WAY.

I think I mentioned somewhere great players in the context of top non league football-ask your dad he'll know.

I mean to quote your example Christian Renaldo-he's not a top player compared to PELE-MARADONNA-PUSKAS-DeSTEFANO-etc etc.

I'm a Slough supporter and I've heard of all the players mentioned thus far in this thread.

Sadly I am only twenty eight years old and have only been following Slough for approximately 71% of my lifetime (about twenty years) so have not seen them all play in the flesh.

I've heard of Gary Attrell's exploits and don't doubt he was a great player and thus far young Thomas has only shown flashes of potential but how can I possibly compare the two.

Really though I am going to refrain from slagging people off because they are either young and therefore don't have my "wealth of experience" or beacuase they are old (RWG) and suffering from the natural degeneration that comes with human ageing.

Ultimately we are all spending time posting on this forum and follwoing Slough the length and breath of (sadly now only Southern) England (and occasionally Wales) so why can't we all just try and get along?

I dont go in for the "best Slough line up" because those players you have quoted never played as a single team, and there is no evidence that they would be able to play as a single united team and gain succsses - they were a group of individuals who had succsses.

Some of the best TEAM performances have been when the big name players have been missing and the team gels and works for each other.

The line up for the North Leigh game on paper was a strong team but it failed to gel and work as a team - the England line up is the same.

You need team players not individuals that will come together as a single unit and work for each other and you cant put that down on paper.

I have observed the same within workplaces where there is a strong efficent team, where you either add or take away one person and the dynamics change and you lose that magic.

Football is a team game and it is the team dynamics that are inportant not individual high flyers.

The issue of former greats just isn't relevant to today's non-league football though - especially the Southern League Division 1. It's all very well quoting your best 11 of all time but it's really only memories, not today's reality.

How could you all overlook E J Norris? In the twenties and thirties he set the Club's all time goalscoring record, notching up a staggering 343 goals in 224 appearances. Call yourselves supporters?

I'm off now to suck on those lovely new Werther sweets, and toothlessly hum that latest Ragtime tune 'Come, Josephine In My Flying Machine'
