Playing/played live round these parts...

Tonight The Bluetones at The Pitz, if I'd known a bit earlier than last night I might have gone...

Now this brings me on to something I've been thinking of for a while....

Right, I'm having a year out before Uni (where I'll be studying Journalism) and wanted to something useful with my time, besides working. So I came up with starting a fanzine/ magazine adout the local music scene. Now, a few questions for you to consider:

1. Should I just cover St Albans, or extend it further to, say the surrounding areas (watford, Hatfield etc)?

2. What should I call it?

3. Do you think there's much point doing it, or do you feel that the local press covers music listings adequately enough already?

Hmm difficult really, knowing what local press is like it probably doesn't give enough coverage to local bands. I think you should try to extend to surrounding areas but you have to know your limits.

Maybe a 5 to 10 mile radius from St Albans.

Chubbman. Speaking from experience (i.e. I live in St. Albans, have done since the dawn of me) I would say that whilst your idea is a good and productive one, it has one or two flaws.

1. Starting a fanzine. Surely there will be a lot of price, printing, distribution worries to think about?

2. The local music scene. I am not too up-to-scratch, but how 'thriving' is the local music scene, in Herts. let alone St. Albans.

3. The local press doesn't really cover local music very well at the moment, but that's not what they are aiming to do.

I don't want to sound too negative, so a few questions I pose to you.

Who would you be aiming the magazine at?

How would you distribute it?

How often would the magazine go into circulation?

If you're taking a year out, will you be going to any City matches?

BTW, the views expressed above are my modest and humble opinion, and do not have to be listened to at all.

EFMTFTV could be one to ask about this sort of thing. He's into music (a little, I think), he's into media (so he says, occasionally), and he comes on this message board.

Right:

Problem 1: I know but I'll still be working at the time so this should help with costs. Also hope to get someone else to help me, thereby spreading the costs between 2 people.

Problem 2:The local music scene: This the problem I was thinking of, hence why I was wondering if I should extend my coverage radius. Maybe it would act as a wake up call to the locals to get our music scene up and running!

Problem 3: Which is kind of good for me, as that leaves a gap in the market.

Question 1/2: I would distribute it(hopefully) on the front door of places such as the Pionner, The Horn and so on. Hopefully, I could put advertising for these places in the fanzine and thus strike up a deal!

Q.3: I'd probably start off with once a month (no period jokes ) and see how it goes from there.

Q.4 Probably yes, if the mag and the work don't take up too much time. Hey, if I've got it going by the start of the season, maybe I could distribute it at the various grounds!!!

CYNIC: I like the Mega Herts idea!!

Well If you ever came down to Canvey I would definitely buy a copy. So long as you bought a programme to read my article.

My problem 3 wasn't actually a problem, Chubbham. I've just realised that.

In answer to your intial set of three questions then, I would go for...

1. Attempt to cover the whole of Hertfordshire

2. Mega Herts sounds OK. But it's not too professional, and cynic suggested it.

3. Yes, there is a point in doing it.

Or ESG, in tribute to the founder. Although you'd have to think something up in order for the abbreviation ESG to make sense.

cynic. I was only saying that because you know as well as I do that you'll have Patrick (SACFC) asking you for a constant 90 minutes 'what does mega herts mean?'
