Do we need a reserve goalkeeper ?

Trusting that SCS is number one, there's a bit of a debate as to whether we need the traditional 'second string keeper' on a contract and on the bench.

My personal view is when funds are tight-the answer is NO and funds are better used on an outfield player

Why?

SCS is traditionally injury and suspension free,so is able to play most games.

Realistically, if he were to get injured, the odds are this season that we will lose more than we will win,so the odds are we will lose a game anyway, so it matters less.

The investment is much better spent on an outfield player and broadening the squad in that way.

If SCS were to get injured, Krunic is there for the next game;and clubs are regularly able to pull goalkeepers in on urgent and short term loan from other clubs if a longer term injury/suspension were to occur.

I suspect a reserve keeper-whatever the age-mature of young-learns little from sitting on the bench for most of the season.

To give SCS a small break, Krunic can play in KSC and Ryman league cup.

In league games, i would thus have 5 outfield players on the bench and take the risk-if something were to happen-chances are it would affect one game only and as above-odds are we would lose the game regardless.

Given that-i would have a reserve goalie-Krunic- on bench in FA Cup and Trophy games which are one off games where you do not get a second chance to recover some points.

Thus , if i was BA i would not be investing valuable wages on a second keeper, but invest it in an outfield player instead.

Having siad all that-lets recognise that SCS was amongst the top 3 keepers in the league in 2006/7 .OK-a slight loss of form last season-but still top 8 keeper.

I reckon he will be back to his shot stopping best this season(and he will be having alot of shots to save !!).

Thus the sooner he is off the transfer list the better. If his wages are say

Good points Michael - but I have to say I Agree and Disagree with you.

I agree with the not having to sign a contracted 'keeper, to have someone like Pat Mullins on the bench all season is an unnecessary luxury.

However I do believe we should have a keeper like Krunic or Bowles on the bench. We don't have a deep squad of 19-20 vying for the 10 outfield places, so 10 starters and 4 subs is quite adequate(especially has most of our squad are midfielders)but I think it's a gamble putting one of those between the sticks if SCS is injured <especially if it's early on in the game>

I remember a few terms ago when Mitten was injured near the end of a game at Folkestone & we replaced him with Kola, that made our goal a target for speculative shots and we conceded late in time added on - costing us two points (we'd been 1-0 up since the 50th minute).

This season two points lost in such a fashion could be very costly for us.

I guess its a question of what will make a bigger difference?

A wider choice of 5 outfield players who can win/save/rescue you the game and 1/3 points in every match;

or

the one in 42 games where something does happen to the keeper -where yes-ideallly you want a keeper as a reserve;but the chances are that we would lose the game anyway this season.

In cup matches, i would have a sub keeper though

other people will look at your costing a little bit differant i think.

if rumours are correct then scott is taking a very large lump of the this years budget ,as i see it the amount of money mentioned would allow us two very capable keepers and the luxury of a good outfield player, with money situation as it is i truly believe this is the way it should be.

the fact he is still on the transfer list would point to the fact that managment also see it this way.

if SCS is going to get of the transfer list believe he will have to inpress southall more than ashby, football managers don't usualy no a lot about keepers, so with the benifit of having such a brilliant keeper coach in place it would be stupid not to use his experiance.

suggest we all wait till saturday,it will be managment making the decision not us.

who ever where's the jersey will need all help that we can give him ,::NOW THAT WILL BE OUR JOB::.

michael's idea makes sense. we very rarely need to use a 2nd keeper, so why have one? but if we do have a goalkeeping emergency, cant we just put Southall down as a sub? surely he's good enough to play a Ryman League match against the likes of Harrow and Horsham? were already paying his wages, so it would be no extra cost, and he was one of the best keepers in the country in the 90's...
