Goalkeepers' Attire

I'll probably be labelled old fashioned but I really do have to say it - I cannot stand the kit that most goalkeepers wear during matches nowadays.

I know that in years gone by goalkeepers generally wore either a yellow or a green jersey and either the same colour shorts as the rest of the players or black, but nowadays the majority of them look as though they would be more at home goalminding or whatever it is called for an ice hockey team. Todays Cray Wanderers 'keeper's kit was a good example of this.

Given the protection that today's 'keepers get compared to that which those of the past enjoyed I cannot see the reason for it all. Pitches seem much better as well (try playing on the 1950's Garlinge pitch No.3 in February then you can talk about bad pitches!).

And is there any chance that we can extricate SCS from that grey kit that he favours. Put him in something coloured and striking.

That's my moan over.

I always thought that whilst pitch no.4 sloped, it was a bit more even in the goals and drained better.

The goal mouth in pitch no.3, at the no.4 end if you see what I mean, was almost like a mountain range at times in early part of the year. When frozen almost lethal.

Pitch No.2 always seemed the best pitch, perhaps prone to getting a bit more muddy than the prestigious pitch no.1.

Pitch 4 still is much worse than pitch 3. Pitch 2 is probably the better of the 4. However I like playing at Northdown Park and the Warre Wreck's not that bad. I also have happy memories of playing at St Nicholas with Marco United. Anythings better that Jackey bakers. JB pitches are pants!

On the subject of attire and not pitches! I'll wear what ever shirt i'm given. However i've worn shirts in all sorts of colour's but have chosen a 2 tone green nike shirt for this season. I don't however like these short sleeved keepers shirts.

I am however thankful that I do not have to wear bright mad shirts as I did in the early 2000's.

For me a kit should have reasonable arm padding and be reasonably strong. Keepers gloves are important. I've had all makes including those that the Cray keeper was wearing but have found the best have got to be Sells. I don't care how they look, just that they work well. Also boots, I see some players wear red, blue or multi coloured football boots. Its good old plain black for me. Wow I sound really boring.
