One week to go

Its one week to go, so what are peoples thoughts on this coming season.

I'll start off with mine. I have been a bit concerned and sometimes critical over the last few months with the signing of a large number of local players with no Ryman experience. I am however a little happier at this stage with the current team, although I do believe we still need two or three players, mainly due to the fact that we will pick up injuries during the season. I would still have liked to see us play a team above us, just to give us some sort of idea as to where we are. I do however hope to see some of these young players come good as the season progresses. If you look at Aldershot last season they built their team, and won the Conference by a record number of points, by investng and encouraging youth. It should also mean that injuries may clear up a bit quicker as they are younger. Also BA has increased training to 3 times a week and so another positive.

With the conference kicking off yesterday there will be a few players out there still looking for clubs so we may be able to pick up a couple of decent players in the next week or so. It will be interesting to see if what, if any, triallists play today.

Im not too sure where we will finish as there are a lot of very strong teams in the league this season. A top half finish should be achievable but it is going to rely a lot on who we get through the turnstiles. We are still one of the best supported teams in the league and so if we can get more people through the turnstiles, than the number the club have budgeted for, we could find some extra cash to improve the squad later on. Looking at the BSB south attendances yesterday, for the opening matches of the season, we could more than hold our own. However once again this always runs in tandem with results. With the number of Kent derbies coming up lets hope this is achievable. I just hope that we can match our local rivals when we play them.

Another positive thing this season is the fact that we are not among the favourites, and so there is less pressure on the team. I suppose the last time that we were in that position was our first season in the Conference. The management team looks very positive and it appears that a lot of work is going on in the background with the youth.

Then there is the ground development. I was surprised by the lack of enthusiasm by the news update on Friday. I think there is a lot of sceptisism about the announcement after all the previous ones, but at least we are getting updates, which is what we have been asking for for ages. We now have a kit and a sponsor, which didn't look too promising last week either.

One big issue this year however is going to be disciplin. We do not want unnecessary disciplin issues this season which will cost us suspensions, as in past seasons. I am a little concerned that BA could be another George Borg or Steve Evans, a sending off in a PSF is not a great start. I hope I am proved wrong.

All in all I,m a lot more optomistic, so heres to a great season.

I tend to agree with most of that.

I now also believe that the investment in younger players-not necessarily youth-is the right way to go as opposed to the journeymen ryman players going around.

Next week will be a good test as carlshalton are for me a top 6 side and have invested in players with ryman and conf south experience-but arguably are also ryman league journeymen.

i also watched Welling at bath yesterday, where Andy Ford has quite a young side-many players from the lower leagues-and they played excellent football and put a more experienced bath side to the sword-they made bath look ageing, slow and unfit.

I think we have a decent chance of holding our own-and that is my only expectation-just keep in this lerague for next season.

Where i do differ is on likely attendances.

Whilst i hope i will be very wrong, frankly, i expect ramsgate in the first few matches to get slightly bigger crowds than Margate-unblelievable but true.

I suspect there will be less than 150 there today, and for our first game a week on tuesday, i reckon the attendance will be less than 350- very possibly below 300 even

I hope i am wrong, but i really do think that will be the case .

Trott instigated the decline in attendances-and it will take some time to arrest that fall.

its like the credit crunch-we have not yet reached the bottom.

Given that, i still think that by next friday, we may have learnt that BA has assembled a side better than many of us were anticipating in mid May.

Up the 'Gate.

Wrong I think that the attendance given was 222 (Steve B will obviously correct me if I am wrong). To be out by over 48% is a terrible assumption to make.

222 for a PSF is pretty good considering the recent turmoil. I, along with many others, never attend friendlies so lets hope for a good start next week to entice those floating supporters through the turnstiles for the first home game.

Just to add to that, there was also a decent programme today so compliments to SB and whomever else was involved in that. Having seen four of the PSF's, only Thamesmead made the effort to produce a programme of those games and to be fair it was nowhere near as good as today's. Well done again.

Agree Tom so much better than the 224 for our opening friendly.

One of those was Sanderson

I am extremely optimistic for this season, we won't really do much though this season, but we most certainly won't get relegated. I think considering the circumstances Ashby and co have made what seem to be some decent signings.

Attendance wise i think if we get 400+ for a game then that will be a good attendance although our first few home games i think the attendances will be above 400.

Best of luck to the managing team and of course the players.

This was the 1st time i have seen the new look squad and i must say it was no worse than last season , in some cases the ground work and 1 touch were much better . If Ryan is to play up front he will be an asset to the club , he took his goals well yesterday but he has to cut out the show boating , got a bit cocky towards the end of the game do the Ronaldo stuff , but looked good just don`t do it unless we are 4-0 up with a couple of mins to go Ryan and if Ryan is to play in the NO8 shirt we should call him the ..........RYAN8TOR.......... Up the Gate .

Just thought i'd bring this up, every time we've played Carshalton at home we've won and every time we've played them away we've lost. Due a win there Saturday hopefully.
