Gave it away in the 2nd half. We seemed to come out again too cocky that the game was won.

 

Poor marking of their number 11 led to the first goal when he was an obvious problem.

 

I was surprised at how slow Gash is. Good finish but a real lack of speed. And what was going on with Big John? Didn't seem to want to score today (all be it in the limited time he was on the pitch)

I'm not sure what was more surprising today finding Peter Hawkins starting at right back or Liam's substitution.....taking off Shakes for Akinde whilst winning 2-1 and leaving Hawkins exposed down their left which led to the the cross for the equalizer.

 

We played great for 30 mins but then went off the boil started getting pushed back and reverting to hoofing longer balls in desperation. We had our chances to close it out but it wasn't to be. Liam seemed to be happy with the performance in his post match interview....I think Hawkins was a poor choice at right back and the substitution poorer.

 

Still, good crowd and a couple of good goals to get us underway, lets hope they return.

I was supprised to see Shakes subbed. I thought Akinde was coming on to replace Moore. Shakes was doing OK, he just wasn't being fed enough balls down the flank, and not only that it also left Hawkins exposed. At least Shakes managed to pick off a few attacks by the Mansfield forwards. No Ricketts either! GUTTED

Moore is never subbed, as he's Liam's love child. Thought Akinde would replace Gash, who doesn't look fit yet, especially with the extra weight. Changing to 4-3-3? showed Hawkins weakness, he hasn't got the pace. When Jason Lee (10) came on for Mansfield, he worked well with Matt Somner (11), giving them extra height as a target man. Laying crosses and corners off in our goal area.

All in all a great first half, but a very sloppy second. The games not over till the man in black blows his whistle.

Very disappointed to lose 2 points at the end but the performance was very encouraging from all players new and old.

Michael Gash looked good and should definitely improve as he gets fitter.

The only complaint (apart from the crap weather) was that we got out-muscled by Mansfield at the start of the 2nd half. They had clearly had the hairdryer treatment from psycho McEwen and came out strong. They were just long ball hoofers and we should be able to cope with that better. Paul McCarthy's experience would have helped.

11 was Blackwood I thought. Somner was that thug in the middle (8) who if Opinel got booked for what he did should have seen yellow in the first half for his umpteen shirt pulls and niggles alone.

I thought Akinde should have come on for Luke Moore; Moore was winning nothing in the air, so putting Akinde on would have increased the chances of keeping hold of the ball and stopping Mansfield from counter-attacking.

 

Great 'debut' from Gash; he doesn't need speed when he uses the vision and deftness of touch he possesses. Akinde didn't look sharp and on another day would have wrapped the points up with the couple of chances he squandered.

 

Stacy looks even better than he did at his best last season. In Gash, Akinde, Long and Shakes to name but a few, we've got some really clever players. As well as being technically good, they can play the unexpected passes to unlock defences and know when to run, when to hold the ball up etc.

 

Darius won every challenge he was involved in from where I was stood and looked solid and composed, save a couple of hoofs. Sacha couldn't be faulted.

 

The result feels like a loss to me, but there's so much to be optimistic about for the season! Roll on Tuesday!

You might be right Stu, I'm going by the Squad list on the back of the programme. Obviously not up to date.

After a superb 1st half performance, the draw felt like a defeat at the final whistle, most people were suprised that JA came on for Shakes and not possibly Luke Moore, but Liam knows his job and is a great Manager, so I'm certainly not going to question why he made the Substitution that he did. Hopefully we will learn very quickly from this, teams like Mansfield will not accept defeat just because they have gone behind, we have to keep playing for the full 90 minutes, as today proved, the referees whistle signals the end of a match, not how many goals in front you are. Overall though it was a good performance.

Yes it was a good performance overall and I think it bodes well for the season ahead, although it's early days yet... I've been talking to some Mansfield fans and they were more than happy to come away with a draw.
