Players Equipment - Safety

In readiness for the start of season 2008/09, can you please ensure all your constituent clubs are

aware of the directives issued to match officials in respect of player equipment as outlined below:

Players Equipment - Safety

Match Officials are reminded that Law 4 states:

I don't see the issues with wedding rings/bands etc if they are taped up. Not exactly gonna hurt someone.

As for the under garments, I don't see what difference in makes (with the exception if the teams kit is short sleeved and the under garment a different colour).

We aren't playing for pro clubs who provide everything in matching colours. Some teams have kits that aren't in the regulation 4-5 colours that you can get makes like under armour in, so that kind of penalises those players!!

Not allowing a taped wedding ring/band seems very harsh to me. You can wear a taped ring whilst undergoing an operation in hospital.

SOME people are very superstisious/sentimental about wedding rings.

Agree with TSF (shock!!) and BJR there.

The FA should be more worried about the more important things on a fottball pitch. I remember a game against Reading the season before last on a very cold Tue night where the ref wouldn't start the game unless one of our players pulled up his under armour sleeves so that they couldn't be seen under the short sleeved top, yet wasn't bothered that I had one under a long sleeved GK shirt!!

BJR is correct, some people's jewellery means a lot to them (sentimental or family reasons) and as long as it doesn't pose a threat or danger to other players they should be allowed to wear them albeit taped up.

I might be able to understand it, if the said wedding ring sported a very large cut stone, but a plain gold band ?

Bureaucracy gorn mad !

Not my rules KS I was just showing you guys what we have been told. We wouldnt search you bu trings are fairly bloody obvious. The problem is that referees have been sued in the past for not stopping people from playing. Perhaps some form of disclaimer should be signed by each player before the match smile

This rule about jewellery was talked about at the Suburban League meeting last night. Sounds like there is unlikely to be much leeway given by the refs although there is talk of players being given just a warning during the first weeks of the season but after that they won't be allowed to play.

As was pointed out, how far will this go? With body jewellery on the increase, will refs be strip searching players to check for nipple piercings and Prince Alberts?

Talking to an 'expert' on this matter last night. (a legal-eagle).

In theory, it could be asked that ALL jewellery be removed, APART FROM a wedding ring which would have to be securely taped.

A player MIGHT have a very good case under the Human-Rights Act, if it was insisted that a wedding ring be removed against his(her) religious/personal belief grounds.

I will await the first court-case with interest !!
