Stevenage match info

I might be wrong but i think the stevenage fans are being a bit mischievous,it was a very strong side, lee boylan who scored most of there goals would not be out of place in league one or two posibilly the championship, many clubs are after him and he seems to take his pick.

I think the players should hold their heads up high, they tried hard and for moements in the game threatened stevenage and for a moement after taking the lead were doing well.

Stevenage missed loads of course, Beames did well as did jacko to keep the score down,i will stick my neck out and say there is no way that this side will struggle next season,

Well done Rebels!!

It may not have been their first team but it was a strong team who played last night. Just look at the line-up

S Drench - Former Blackburn

L Wilson - Formerly of Colcechester

C Willock - Former clubs include Fulham, QPR, Brentford, Bristol Rovers, Orient

L Oliver - Signed from Yeovil for

Despite the fact that these players are all full time, I thought our boys gave a good account of themselves and should hold their heads up!!

I would also say that the Slough starting 11 from last night will be the strongest team going into the season.

We look more solid in defence and midfield and can create plenty of chances for Jordan and Platt. Good to see Platt play. He will be a good signing fo us! Cant wait to get going!

Overall I thought that we played quite well last night considering the obvious difference in quality between the two teams, but you have to remember there are 3 levels between the 2 sides.

We held them off well for the first 30minutes or so, and it was a good goal that put us 1 up, but then the obvious finishing quality in the final 1/3 really kicked in.

A shame we couldn't have taken a few of the chances we had in the second half, but I think against a step 4 team we should be alright.

Obviously the result wasn't great but should have given the guys a decent enough work out in terms of fitness. Good to see Matt Platt return.

Stevenage played at a much higher tempo than we were used to and had a lot of pace up front, just placing a through ball between the defence and running on to it led to many of their goals. Lets not forget it was also the first time what I would say is probably the first XI played together.

As said already, I think our right side is still a problem. Will be interesting to see the result against Godalming Saturday.

As stated above the right side was weak to none existant and Dicko is not up to the job - he has failed to impress in any of the preseason games and needs replacing before the season kicks off.

Last night was ok for the first 30 mins but once SB got going there was no stoping them, we came back a bit at the end.

There ability to break showed where our defence needs to have enough speed to deal with this and I am not sure where this is coming from - we do of course have Daly with his speed to counter this threat!

Went to the bar at 1-1 and basically missed their six goals, so yeah, from what I saw last night we looked pretty good!

The right side does look to be a problem

Yes there may well be a gap between us and StevenageF.C. whether its their reserves or boys team, but on the whole when teams from the Conference or Division 3 etc play the Premier sides, it is very rare to see a slaughter. So that is a poor excuse, also on here some optomistic person suggested that playing friendlies against lower league teams ( albeit losing most of them)was a good learning curve-so tell me what have we learnt. The manager ? still plays Dickin on the right and yet its obvious he is not up to standard, still playing Roberts who is not only too small but sadly lacking in talent.I would have thought a TOP manager like " SWEETS " would have gone out and got some other players to try.

Well I have to agree with the last sentence at least. The gap in class last night was one thing we couldn't avoid, but frankly I'm amazed we have no fourth striker and no right hand side yet. We should have at least seen trialists by now. Unless of course we're going to use the U18s in these areas?

We have played 6 teams in lower divisions and lost 2 of them, that's hardly "losing most of them". Get your facts correct before slagging people off.

You seem to be the only person who thinks that putting 11 new players together should get immediate results...

This is strange I kinda agree with most of you in different ways:

Pleasing Aspects:

1) First of all great work out for fitness

2) I thought we caused them problems in attack, especially when Gumbsy and DJ were paired together, and if we cause the Conference favourites problems, that bodes well.

3) At 1-0 and 1-1 thought we played some good football

4) DJ and Platt played together

5) Pierson & Fenton played together

Negative Aspects:

1) Pretty embarrassing scoreline despite their side

2) Thought we got overrrun far too easily in central midfield

3) Bit disappointed in our fitness

4) Lack of subs. It's pre-season. In my opinion we should be looking at trialists left, right and centre.

5) We seemed to have ignored the youth team last night. I especially would like to see the 8 (Sonny) involved in the first team as I think he's potentially good enough.

Still not sorted Aspects

1) Right midfield. I think were fine if we sort this position, and I hate to sound like a broken record, but if I and others can see it then why can't the management. Look at their right winger. Never moved from the touchline last night and that's what a right winger should do.

2) Still missing squad depth in my opinion

I have seen every pre season friendly and have been fairly pleased with the squad Sweetman has assembled. The games have shown the team begginning to find there feet and i feel once the season begins and a regular 11 plays, then we will see a marked improvement.

One thing that does concern me is the right side of midfield, Dickins is not the answer that is glaringly obvious, in my opinion i would like to see J Ellis given a few games to see if he is the answer. In the games i have seen when Ellis has played he has shown alot more knowledge on the right and given the team alot more options.

The back four needs tightening and i feel Roberts at right back and Harper back in the centre will benefit the team much more.

Looking forward to an eventful season

Yes I agree Boylan is a great player but IMO 3rd or 4th choice striker. Martin (centre mid) is the other that will command a regular 1st team spot. To be fair 5 others will feature in and out of the side or on the bench but not 1st choice. Agree the point regarding the 4 step difference above and somewhat see this game as abit pointless on your side as this can't do anything for confidence for the forthcoming season. Good Luck

IMO i think the back four is more than adequate. I agree that Harper is more effective at centre back, but is starting to settle into the right back position nicely. I spoke to his father at the game last night and he said he is still trying to adapt after spending the last 3 years as a centre back. The right hand side of midfield is still a problem, but I dont think Ellis is the solution. He wouldnt give anything we dont already have. With the centre backs I think it is a good combination with Pierson and Fenton as Fenton has the pace to cover Pierson. Im also looking forward to watching a full season with Pritchard in midfield. He is a class act and will work very well with Jordan and Platt.

YOu seem to think that being honest about players ability is too slag them off,on the contrary just giving a point of view as I see it.
I always want the best for Slough F.C. I know full well that the " Good Times " are long gone and the really great players we had in the past will never be seen again in the short term, but as a paying customer of many years I am intitled to my opinion.

ps. six games should be enough to at least see some marked improvement.
