Cockfosters 'win' Floodlight Cup

Recommended Posts

Following plenty (too much) mincing around by Saffron Walden Town and the relevant authorities, the Floodlight Cup final, which was supposed to be played next Tuesday 5th, has been cancelled.

This, as I understand it, is because Saffron Walden are 'not ready' to play the game yet. This after they refused to play it at the end of last season as well - mysteriously, they were able to stage a Sunday cup final (apparently most of their players play for some mob called Quendon) - but purely coincedence I'm sure...

I also hear that they have been kicked out of this season's competition (Hertford to come in apparently?).

So presumably this means Cockfosters are Floodlight Cup winners 2007/08?

Totally unsatisfactory way of winning a trophy, especially as it would have been Cockfosters' first senior trophy for many years. Very disappointed in Saffron Walden. From what I understand, Cockfosters are hardly firing on all cylinders themselves at the moment (players on holiday/trialists etc) but they could muster 11 players to put on a red shirt at least.

One question I have to ask is how did the league allow it to come to this? Pretty shabby state of affairs if you ask me.

Nothing new, Reds76. The match between Saffron Walden Town and Potters Bar Town a couple of seasons ago was delayed by about four months as they "weren't ready" or it "wasn't suitable" on any of the first four dates I offered them. Memorably, the first date I offered them (in about mid-September) was met with the immortal phrase "that's too early, you're a Southern League side and you'll batter us if we play you then"!

The game eventually took place about a week before Christmas, we took half a side and still battered them anyway! It did mean that we were playing catch up for the rest of the season and ended up playing the semi final and final a few days apart in mid-May.

That competition is much better off without Saffron Walden Town.

Our application arrived too late due to a mix up in communications, so that's good.

The SSML doesn't actually run this competition.

PS Congratulations!

Sorry, didn't mean to "diss" Cockfosters! I think we are involved in too many cups - FA Cup, FA Vase, Herts Senior Cup, Herts Charity Cup/Shield, SSMFL Challenge Trophy, SSMFL Premier Division Cup, South Midlands Floodlit Cup, East Anglian Cup, Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy (sometimes).

Horace, personally as a player a cup is a cup!! I used to love the Roy Bailey as it was one of the only chances you got to play against other local clubs is different leagues and divisions on a fairly regular basis.

Plus if you took away Roy Bailey and South Mids Floolit Cup that would be half my medals gone laugh

From my experience, most players don't know the difference between the various cups. It can be a nightmare signing a player mid-season and trying to find out which cups they've already played in. The one thing you can't rely on is asking the player himself because 99.9% of them haven't got a clue which cups they've played in!

South Midlands Senior Floodlit Cup 1st Round
Cockfosters v Hertford Town

No doubt Horace will delight in correcting me if I'm wrong but I believe Cockfosters begin their 'defence' of the South Midlands Senior Floodlit Cup this evening (Tuesday) following last season's farce. As it's the only game on involving SSML Club's other than the eagerly awaited Wootton Blue Cross v Biggleswade Town Hunts FA Premier Cup 1st Round tie there should be a decent size crowd at Chalk Lane.
