Whitstable Town 1 Margate 1

Payne is more a midfielder Michael but I think he is one of the youngsters who they signed for the future rather than the present. Plus Smith plays right not left.

Here's my opinion, for what it's worth...

Young and Smith looked very solid in the first half, and felt that Whitstable rarely threatened because of it. Roach, for me, had a dreadful game, often getting caught out of position. Hickman did OK out of position. Second half keeper had a nightmare, very flappy; but, Mullins was impressive. Overall, quite a solid performance defensively.

Stubbs had a cracking game in the middle of midfield, topped off with a stunning strike. His partner, Wilson, struggled to make the same impression as he did on Saturday, but we still saw glimpses of his wonderful array of passing. The wingers, Quain, Peak and Axon, all had poor games for me; all seemed reluctant to get to the byline.

And, upfront, Coleman is clearly still not fit, so hard to assess his contribution yet. Pinnock looked very good, I thought; pacy and very hard-working. With a bit more luck, he maybe would have nabbed a goal. Taylor and Pratt did well, considering a relative lack of service.

All in all, again, I was impressed with the young lads and, with a bit more experience thrown in, we will, I am sure, do well enough this coming season.

I think it was danny Stubbs who was showing plenty of 'energy'.

I read that Whitstable lost 4-0 to dartford yesterday.

I know friendly results 'don't count',but maybe there is a small message there that we have some way to go ?

So you are saying that winning pre-season matches is more important then finding the right formula which in turn will get results when it actually matters, aka the league?

I understand that winning games no matter how much it means will build up confidence, but it's not easy to win games when you are playing with players you haven't played with before, getting used to new management, finding the right formation and style of play and finding out plays best with who. Surely it matters more to find that out first in pre-season then during the season, where you will later pay the consequences.

Friendly results mean nothing. I'd suggest that the majority of Dartford players have played together for a few seasons with a few additions this term. However we have a totally new side which is still in the building process. I think we'll get a better idea of his first 11 in the next few friendlies.

Zander, for such a good kid, you don't half come over as a PRATT.
