surrey FA say their records show Dorking FC as formed 1895, which is a new one, might have to change the club badge.

They confirm Reigate Priory 1st, Colliers wood 2nd albeit under a different name.

Mergers and name changes may be ok if the club can prove continuity, its up to the club to provide the proof to SFA and they can audit and present plaques when confirmed.

Perhaps the sweeney could help research, if Dorking can go back past the 1970's perhaps Guildford can too, even back to Farnham Guildford .

I am now going back to 1664.

Apparently, the FA have no problem with our crest and name.

I dont suppose they do, JR, but thats not the issue, Hastings could call themselves Hastings 1066 and stick it on their badge.

The problem is the club are still claiming to be the second oldest in Surrey when we all now know it isn't, and claims its history back to 1880 which is debatable.

Its these sort of half-truths, and spin without substance that makes people uncertain if all the club's statements and press releases can be fully believed.

When the club gets a bit of time they will research the history a bit further - It is believed that we originated around the 1870's (Reigate Priory been founded in 1872), but were formed finally as DFC in 1880. We were one of ten clubs at the official inauguration of the Surrey County FA in 1882, (they having been founded in 1877).

This is not an invention of the current board but picked up from history dating back to the 50's which Ingram Whittingham, the Clubs Life President and lots of the local old boys can confirm. Indeed the club refers to been 'originally founded in 1880' in all official documents, to take account of the 2-3 year debacle of the G&D 1970s merger.

Even this means that DFC never disappeared as it was the junior partner in the merged club but never lost it's old identity which the SCFA has accepted as correct.

This is 'courtesy of', the Management.

Ingram back in the fifties didnt know that colliers wood united would get confirmation of an 1874 foundation date, or that the club would get taken over by Guildford City.

Now we know:

reigate priory

old carthusians

colliers wood united

then maybe dorking.

at best fourth oldest club in surrey, if you can discount the merger and name changes.

It wouldnt matter too much if it wasnt repeated by Ray at every opportunity , see the first post. As I said, it makes people a little less sure of the clubs other claims.

quoting from the club's website history page, recently updated:

1974 saw the merger of the club with Guildford City of the Southern League to form Guildford & Dorking United. After just two seasons, however, the club collapsed in mid-season, with another club being formed called Dorking Town in 1977 to complete its predecessor's remaining games before joining the Surrey Senior League in 1977/78 and then the Athenian League.

just to clarify my opinion here, I agree a Dorking Fc was first formed in 1880 and that the current Dorking FC should be able to claim that history despite the seventies, despite the name changes/owner changes they were still the chicks at Meadowbank.

I just think its daft to say all that makes Dorking FC the second oldest club in Surrey, have it as a headline on the website and to shout it from the rooftops when everyone knows it not true.

Why not say Dorking is the oldest SENIOR club in Surrey, given that Colliers wood is really a london borough nowadays, and Reigate Priory and Carthusians are no longer senior clubs?

Doesnt it make more sense, and have a better ring than a disputed claim to be second oldest club?

I do beieve TSF tht the Surrey F.A. have been re-eveluating clubs histories. I've noticed on the Leatherhead website that they have been awarded their centenary plaque. However i know that they wetre formed in the 1940's following a merger of 2 clubs.

yes ive corresponded with surrey fa JC, and mergers/name changes can allow continuity. its basically up to the clubs to show documentary evidence to get the plaques.

the guildford farnham club at the first surrey fa meeting could be now Farnham or Guildford for example.

I seem to remember their being some centenary celebrations at Dorking in 1980, but it was a little controversial as everyone knew the club had only been reformed 2 or 3 seasons.

colliers wood were called vardean or similar, and have only become cwu and a senior club relatively recently but they are having a plaque and big game to celebrate, and good luck to them.

old carthusians have good evidence, they can say look at the fa cup !
