DFC wins award at CCL AGM

Recommended Posts

From 'DorkingNews'

DFC were delighted to receive from the CCL the well regarded Club Secretary of the year award at the AGM on Friday

Congratulations to Club Secretary Ray Collins on receiving the award in what was an eventful season for the club.

Ray said, "I can hardly believe it was for my fantastic (in reality awful) football secretarial abilities but as the CCL Chairman John Bennett and League Secretary and Surrey County FA Director Les Pharo said, it was for 'services above and beyond the call' to football in general - especially for keeping the second oldest club in Surrey from extinction via MVDC - a reality that we should not forget that only 8 weeks ago they were actively attempting to achieve!"

still knocking the council at every opportunity? It cant help the negotiations to keep that attitude.

and the 2nd oldest club in surrey? I thought that honour was lost in the seventies.

Anyway well done and congratulations on your award Ray, there is no doubt you have given your all to what you believe in.

Credit where credits due, gussy, the guy signed on nearly a hundred players and got no points deductions this year, in the middle of preparing court cases,he worked extremely hard at it all.

Not through gritted teeth at all, well done, Ray.

And on the knocking bit you're right, its done me no good, and it wont do the club any good either.

second oldest club in surrey?

the surrey fa is having a celebration to mark 75 year and 100 year plus anniversaries and colliers wood uniteds name came up as being surprisingly ancient.

who are the oldest clubs in surrey, and whats the criteria needed to get the plaque from Surrey fa?

I believe reigate priory is the oldest in surrey, Ash are quite old but as we all know they are from Hampshire.

Sure is - had the car serviced in Aldershot the other day so walked to Ash station. Didn't pass any 'Welcome to Surrey' sign......

The Surrey fa have traced Bookham back to 1905 flame unfortunately we were informed in 2008 !!! The Club new we were nearing our centenary as the club where 1st affiliated in 1921 to the Surrey FA and there was info going back to pre 1st world war but we had no definate date.

Reigate Priory 1870

Colliers Wood 1874

Dorking 1880

Thing is, Dorking may have been advised previously by the Surrey FA that they were at the time the 2nd oldest and Colliers history may have only recently been traced back to that date. Dont know if there is any other team prior to Colliers

How do name changes and mergers effect it?

If Dorking fc is 1880, what about Guildford city FC?

What effect did the rise and fall of Guildford and Dorking United have on both clubs histories?

and of the clubs that went to the 1st Surrey FA meeting how many are still around, albeit under another name?

Dunno TSF you'd have to contact the Surrey FA for that sort of detail.

Can BJR also tell us what it was like before he invented the wheel grin

from the surrey fa site

The Surrey County F.A. was formed in 1877 playing representative games against Kent, Middlesex etc.

At a meeting in Guildford on 16 March 1882 it was reorganised and voted to affiliate to the Football Association and at the same time a County Senior Cup competition. was introduced. The ten clubs present at the meeting were Clapham Rovers, Dorking, East Sheen, Esher, Farnham Guildford, Reigate Priory, St. Thomas's Hospital, Surbiton and Barnes.

so priory and colliers wood were formed before the surrey fa was.

and theres Guildford, joined with Farnham. How many clubs have Guildford been tied up with? one for the history students, Sweeney!

It seems a minor thing but it's at the heart of how a lot of people in the town see the way the club is now.

Its about trust, integrity, honesty, transparency.

The website has been revamped and says second oldest football club in Surrey.

The board kept repeating that during the fight against the council, "how can they destroy the second oldest club in Surrey?"

It all sounds good to the outsider, but is it actually true?

It doesnt seem that way, other clubs in Surrey still in existence were formed before 1880, and Dorking fc hasnt played season after season since 1880.

Its folded and changed names several times.

If Surrey FA are willing to confirm the line then the club can use it and are right to highlight it with pride.

Colliers Wood are also affiliated to the London FA.

Definitely formed in 1874. (El Gaffer paid a farthing for a wooden seat which had Gussy's name carved on it)! elephant

We will be presented with a Surrey FA award at our friendly with AFC Wimbledon on 23rd July.
