FOOTBALL STALWART IS HONOURED AS VILLAGE'S CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

A football stalwart that has put in half a century of service to his village club has been honoured.

Roger Sampson, club secretary of GWR,has been named village citizen of the year for 2008 by Great Wakering Parish Council.

MR Sampson 65,joined the club as a 15 years old player in 1958 and worked his way through the ranks. After a stint as treasurer,he became secretary of the club, which plays at Burroughs Park,in 1980 and has stayed in that post ever since.

Mr Sampson, who lives in Lee Lotts,Great Wakering, said:It's a great honour, but i was surprised when the Council contacted me and said i had been nominated.

"I feel very proud of the club and all we have achieved. We have built it up from a village team playing in the local park to a well-run,semi-professional club, with a proper pitch,a stand and a clubhouse."

Mr Sampson was given his prize of a crystal bowl by parish chairman,Trevor Goodwin.

This award is given to the villager who does most to preserve the community spirit and is believed to have gone the extra mile in maintaining the enjoyment of village life.

I believe all people that have met or known Roger over the years, would agree in saying "WELL DONE" to a good man like him. applause
